Hfan Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Anyone have experience with Seth Lovers in a 157? Or I suppose a 150. After years of resisting and holding tight to the Schallers in mine, curiosity got the best of me, I ordered a set of Seths for my 157, got a good deal. So many pickup choices out there it's mind boggling. Hope I made a good choice.
H Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Don't do it, Pete. Box them up and send them to me. I'll dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way. Promise
Blunote Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 They're fantastic in my 9 lb 150 Deluxe. It's a great vintage vibe. You'll love them.
Millennium Maestro Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Could have got you a clean set of Used Seths for a deal..

Promise Ha, One thing I liked about the Seths is they came with new pup rings, my 157 has a very high arch and the neck ring, by the time I get it shaped, is very thin in the middle. The latest one I installed that Howard was kind enough to send me (hard to get Schaller rings in the US) recently cracked. Started looking for a new ring but figured I'd just get conventional, one adjust screw per side, humbuckers. I saw some rings at GC that had a neck ring that has more height to it which would allow me to sand it down in the middle and still have some meat left. The SD rings look that way too.

Could have got you a clean set of Used Seths for a deal.. Tell me they are not Gold covered.. I actually started a thread recently asking if anyone had used buckers they wanted to flip. I could have swapped covers as well assuming the same pole positions. Saw a pretty cheap new set and just went for it.
DetroitBlues Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I love my gold covered Seth's in my Epi Dot. Sounds awesome to me, so much so it's kept me from upgrading to a Heritage Semi Hollowbody...
FredZepp Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I've got a Seth in my #1 guitar ... a 1992 H-150 with a Burstbucker One ( underwound ) at neck and Seth at bridge. I played it for years not knowing what was in it.. and didn't care because it sounds fantastic. and the Centurion has Seth's in it. I like them.
davesultra Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Thought I had them in my 157 that I bought from smaj. Only to find out after I sold it to greatmutah that they were actually '59s. Still it sounded great.
Gitfiddler Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Yep, got a set of Seths in this baby and she sings!!
Hfan Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 Thanks guys, my anxiety level is decreased. Usually I obsess about these kinds of decisions, this time I winged it. I may have to rough up the covers a little, my 157 is kind of aged. Scotchbrite maybe
Yooper Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 I'm pondering Seths in my 150 too. I've read that replacing the SD '59's A5 magnets with A2's would be almost the same as Seths. Only one way to find out...
Hfan Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 I have Seths in my 575 but that really doesn't tell me much about a solid body application. I like the SD Antiquities in my 535 which have some resemblance to Seths from what I have read.

smurph1 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Loved the Seths in my 535.. Too bad I couldn't bond with the neck.. Oh well, She's got a good home now!
koula901 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Must be everyone loves the Seths but me, so, I'm the outlier. I had Seths in the 150 I used to have but found them too wooly. I like a little more note definition. I'm very happy with the '59s I have in my 150.
Blunote Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 Seems like everyone was fawning over Seth Lovers 4 years ago when I first joined the HOC. After a while though, they sort of became passé. Fortunately, I'm not swayed by that. In my guitar they're capable of really smooth cleans or can growl like mean dog with a little spank. To me, that's the essence of a Les Paul.
heritagefan7 Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 I have them in my 150 (formerly Millie Maestro's)...They have a great tone. Versatile--very traditional LP rock sound to my ear with distortion...I don't hear them as metal pups though...MM & I talked abt this prior to me buying this...He was right on. LP Jazz all the way to rock, even harder rock (Zepplin, Nugent, etc)...but not edgy enough for metal--IMO. Don't think they quite get to the Guns & Roses stage...but again, that's just me.

Hfan Posted November 30, 2013 Author Posted November 30, 2013 Yep, I'll put em in myself. Seems to be a consensus that they are decent and kind of vintage sounding which is what I'm after. As a long time defender of the Schallers I'm curious what the Seths will do to the 157. I was playing with the idea of buying a LP and selling the 157 but after playing a few unimpressive $2k LPs I figured screw it, put a few bucks into the 157. Thanks for all the good input.
greatmutah Posted December 2, 2013 Posted December 2, 2013 The 59s did sound great. I imagine the Seth's are excellent. For my purposes I preferred the G 57 Classics I dropped in.
