peterbright Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 I have trouble puting entire sets of strings on as I feel that I have to rebel. I started with a set of Daddario Chrome Flat wounds and used the G through E strings (.024w, .032, .042 & .052). I replaced the B and High E with an .018w B (yes Virginia a wound B string) and an .013 E. The combination sounds great but I have to use care on stringing that B string up...no kinks allowed or it explodes. It came with a set of 10's on her and that's not my style. I'm going to let it settle in but the higher action also suits me. Have not fooled with the intonation yet. I'll let the strings play in first.
MartyGrass Posted December 14, 2013 Posted December 14, 2013 Why a wound B out of curiosity? It seems like a 17 or 18 unwound could do the job cheaper, louder and with more sustain. But I'd love to hear your results. I may try it myself. Where did you get a matching wound 18? Interesting.
peterbright Posted December 14, 2013 Author Posted December 14, 2013 I don't remember where I got the last batch but I still have a few acoustic and electric .018w's. I like how they feel and sound.
peterbright Posted December 14, 2013 Author Posted December 14, 2013 Just Strings have the TI .018w single strings...they are pricey. MG if you want to try one, I'll send you one when my order comes in.
Hfan Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I commend you for going to those lengths, I'm lucky if I can get my lazy ass to install a normal set.
peterbright Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 I have those days as well. Now I have to break out the nut files as the B and G are hanging up a bit when I tune. Will probably try nut sauce first. Just strings shipped today so they should be in this week.
rockabilly69 Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I wouldn't refile that nut until I was sure I was going to use that gauge of string, nut sauce sounds smarter! Interesting choice of strings:)
peterbright Posted December 21, 2013 Author Posted December 21, 2013 Marty...they arrived today and two coming your way. Don't cry if you break one tuning up to pitch.
MartyGrass Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 It wouldn't be the first time. But thanks for the warning. And thanks!
peterbright Posted December 21, 2013 Author Posted December 21, 2013 no problem or as my Chinese wife, daughter, nephews, nieces, grand nephews and nieces would say "May Wen Ti"
