MartyGrass Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Many of you are familiar with this guitar. There were progress posts on it during the build about a year ago. The first notable thing is that one of the case latches is broken. The case works fine of course with the remaining latches. The action is very low. Jay Wolfe had the guitar PLEK'd. The neck is an R9 carve exactly. The thickness is 0.91" at the nut and 1.02" at the 12th. You can see the tool marks that someone left on the binding in the first shot. Those can be buffed off, but they should be there. The neck was not quartersawn. That's a little odd. Marv personally did the neck and says it really doesn't matter either way. He'd know. Here's the label. It has Earthbrane Skatterbranes. The pups are PAFs with Alnico IVs wrapped at 7.6 and 8.4 K. They sound fine but I need to restring the guitar before I can really comment. The soldering is "generous" and the pots work really well. There's some shiny, dried stuff on the wood by the harness. I don't know what that is.
MartyGrass Posted December 23, 2013 Author Posted December 23, 2013 The back is two pieced. The neck carve created some interesting patterns on the back of the headstock.
MartyGrass Posted December 23, 2013 Author Posted December 23, 2013 The top is really mesmerizing. Cover the kids' eyes before you look. This is an ultra top. But it has a long rap sheet of being disorderly.
MartyGrass Posted December 23, 2013 Author Posted December 23, 2013 The guitar is a little heavier than most Millies due to the neck. But it's not neck heavy and plays easily. I'm not sure why this guitar didn't meet the needs of its original owner. It will do jazz as well as a 535. And that may be the problem. It doesn't capture the nuances of a large archtop for swing.
Gitfiddler Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Nice. That neck would fit nicely in my big paws. I bet that shiny stuff inside the control cavity is Heritage pixy dust. You seem to perform surgery on all newcomers to your harem. Is that a physician thing?
skydog52 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 That one is a beauty! That top is skatterbrained. Awesome. Dibs if you are ever so inclined.
Guest HRB853370 Posted December 23, 2013 Posted December 23, 2013 Mark, how exactly do you measure the neck to get those specs on it (R9)?
MartyGrass Posted December 23, 2013 Author Posted December 23, 2013 Here's my fancy instrument for measuring guitar necks. I got this from a friend who is an orthodontist. These are cheap and accurate.

MartyGrass Posted December 24, 2013 Author Posted December 24, 2013 Cheap where? I would imagine Stew-Mac would be rather pricey. Should I call orthodontist offices? Print a picture of it and email it to your dentist. I'd call the office and tell the receptionist what to expect. I'll bet it costs $5. Dentists have tons of these around.
MartyGrass Posted December 24, 2013 Author Posted December 24, 2013 Will my dental insurance cover it? It is covered under the bronze Obamacare plan.

Guest HRB853370 Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 I got mine at a hardware store. Same thing John? And price (approx)?
MartyGrass Posted December 24, 2013 Author Posted December 24, 2013 I got mine at a hardware store. Wait a minute. That's too easy!
Genericmusic Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Guys. I got one in a garage sale a few years back. If I remember correctly I only paid $2.00 for it. They sure are handy.
