smokedtires Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Recently found these while searching for some new speakers. Anyone have any experience with these? They seem like a great value compared to the Celestions I've had in the past. I also like the fact that they're made here in the USA
davesultra Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Never tried 'em, but have also heard nothing but good things about them. I can't think of any names offhand, but have seen there are few small scale boutique builders that use them in their builds.
slider313 Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 They have some good sounding speakers in their offerings. I'm not 100% sure about the made in the USA thing. I believe the parts are sourced from China and the final assembly is done here. I had a pair of their G10C's in my Vibrolux Reverb. Good clean tone with tight bass, however the tone when using an overdrive pedal was not so pleasing.
H Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I came close to putting a WGS Veteran in my Vibrolux but couldn't find one rated for more than 30W. There are some pretty good speakers in the WGS range.

There are some pretty good speakers in the WGS range. I've got a 60 watt version in my 2X12 along with a Scumback M75 100w. The cab came to me with these speakers and they sounded pretty good so I left them alone.

The guys at WGS said I might push it a little beyond that. As you say, the 12in version handles quite a bit more power.
HANGAR18 Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 Never tried 'em, but have also heard nothing but good things about them. Same here. If I ever find myself needing to install speakers into a cabinet for whatever reason, that brand is at the top of my list for consideration.
212Mavguy Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 My Leslie G27 100w rated cab had a 12 inch WGS speaker designed for it, a 50w D-clone on a setting of under halfway on the master volume killed it. I replaced that with a vintage JBL g125 and haven't looked back. YMMV.
Kuz Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 I generally subscribe to "you get what you pay for", but on trying 4-5 speakers in my Brownface Vibrolux, the two speakers that were way better than my more expensive speaker for this amp, was a Chinese made G12H30 and a $50 Weber Signature series (entry level, the least expensive speaker Weber makes). So sometimes you can be surprised by what works, sounds good then it "sounds good"!!!
Blunote Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 I was talking to the owner of Spiral Re-coning in Berkley Michigan a few years ago about getting an "authentic" speaker for my KBP-built DR clone. I'd asked about a Jensen P12N and he said back in the 60s & 70s, those speakers weren't that highly rated by musicians (PoS might have been the term used). Today, it's one of the gold standards for some of those old amps. Go figure. Either way, WGS makes great speakers at very reasonable prices. If you don't mind paying less, you should try them out.
smokedtires Posted December 29, 2013 Author Posted December 29, 2013 So it looks like the general concensis is positive. Looks like I'll be changing the 70/80s soon then. Now comes the fun part of choosing the PERFECT model
Thundersteel Posted December 29, 2013 Posted December 29, 2013 I have them in my Avatar 2X12 cab--I think they sound great!
jmac Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I have the 2 Veteran 30 10" in a Vintage Sound Vibrolux clone. I think they sound great and are only about 40 dollars each. read about them on a Fender amp site dedicated to improving the amp tone. They are my favorites so far. I had Weber California's and Tone Tubby Alnico and Ceramic combo.. Go figure.. Also have the Veteran 30 and ET65 combo in a cab which sounds great for classic rock. I don't gig with the Vintage Sound so can't say they would hold up with the volume on 9. YMMV
