MartyGrass Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 This 2006 H157 started out as a chestnut sunburst. I personally thing Heritage blew it on the finish, and that's probably why it was NOS in 2012. Here are the daylight pix. The guitar is really beautiful except the pink-purple face. Probably a single bagger. But some people really seemed to like the coloring. I traded the guitar then traded back for it. On the way to me the finish on the top was damaged and could not be restored without refinishing the top. More to come.
MartyGrass Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 Pete Moreno agreed to fix this little sweetheart. Here are some pix with most of the finish off. You can get a sense of how stubborn the staining of the original finish was. Heritage, like most guitar companies, don't hand stain most guitars. They spray them with dye mixed with nitro. Later they add clear nitro to cover the colored layers. This top needed quite a bit of sanding to get to white wood.
MartyGrass Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 Pete has original finishes he got from Gibson over 33 years ago. We started with antique natural, which brings out the soft maple (flame). That looked okay but didn't go with the deep cherry neck, sides and back. We then got this really old Gibson cherry dye and hand rubbed it into the top. Bingo!
MartyGrass Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 Early today the last layer of clear coat had dried. Yes, I know. Too many pix.
PunkKitty Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 There's no such thing as too many pics. It looks great.
Billgelder Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Damn that top looks good. Pete Moreno is a magician!
JackBaruth Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 A genuine improvement over the original finish! Makes the whole saga --- and the patient hours you put into it --- worthwhile!
gpuma Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Before I scrolled all the way down and saw the finished work I was about to write: Don't put gold hardware over that gorgeous red! It still is beautiful though
peterbright Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Quite an improvement but I also liked it originally. Pete M seems to be the man for refinishes.
Gitfiddler Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 H157's x 3! Yea baby!! That turned out fantastic.

MartyGrass Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 Wow, what a quality job!!!!!! Any chance mine was being worked on. If you could do the picture thing for me? Going to be a translucent purple 150. Congrats !! Luving you 157 collection I saw yours today. It has almost all the finish off. He needs to sand it some more. The serial number on the back on the headstock is being well taken care of. Pete has an old Gibson press stamp. He dialed in the correct serial number and put it into the wood. Before putting nitro on it, he will fill the number impressions with a silver or gold pen to make the serial number stand out a little. I may be seeing Pete tomorrow on a different project. If so, I'll post some pix of your H150.
MartyGrass Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 This set of pix shows a recent Heritage cherry finish with flamed (highly figured) maple. Note that the H555 red is a lighter cherry and the flame does not stand out as much. To bring out the flame on the H157, it was necessary to do the staining in two separate steps. This is true with burnt amber also and some other stains as well. The base stain of antique natural not only brought out the flames but also changed the shade of red. These photos are darker than what it would look like in the sun, but you'll get the idea.
holyroller Posted January 4, 2014 Posted January 4, 2014 Holy crap you gotta 555 also? Man , i gotta visit you. My fav guitar is the custom/ 157 style . I just luv the ebony , and spec of that model. Thank you so much!!!! Just nervous about the color change. After seeing your 157, petes work looks really good.
