DetroitBlues Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I left my Traynor on stand by for a couple days... Needless to say, it's not doing so hot. Tubes light up, but there barely is any sound and it's crackling like a loose wire.... Tubes perhaps?
Redsand Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Dude…a couple of days? I would definitely suspect tubes. Call Dean Zink @ 248-681-5104 he's not far from you at all in Keego Harbor.
PunkKitty Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 My guess is that you toasted the tubes. Time for a new set.
DetroitBlues Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 When it's on standby, are all the tubes on?
tbonesullivan Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 The tube heaters are on, but there is no voltage applied to the plates of the power tubes. it's not healthy for it but it shouldn't have killed the amp if you did that. I would definitely take it in stat to see what has happened.
golferwave Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 If you fried the tubes after a couple of days on standby (idle, reduced power) then you were past due for a new set. Get some quality tubes and you'll be set.

smokedtires Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Tubes aren't too bad to swap, just be sure to check/adjust your bias (if this applies). You might find a new love with the new tubes in place
Blunote Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I've left my amps on overnight sometimes. Haven't fried anything yet. I'm sure it will be ok with new tubes. Call Brian. Or if he's too busy, I've used Dean Zink. He's good.
DetroitBlues Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 I think the power tubes were new, so I'll start with the preamps.
TalismanRich Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I once left my Guild amp on for almost a week. Didn't hurt it a bit. There is tube equipment that is left on 24/7 without damage. Two days shouldn't be a major problem unless one of the tubes was weak to start with.
bolero Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 preamp tubes usually last years and years and years...unless they get damaged by mechanical shock or something if I were you I would bring it to a tech & get it a clean bill of health
slider313 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Does the standby cut voltage or just act as a "mute" switch. Are the power tubes mounted to a pcb?
DetroitBlues Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 Good question Slider, I have no idea.

Two days shouldn't be a major problem unless one of the tubes was weak to start with. Same here with my AC30CC1 and they were known for running hot. My guess is a sloppy solder joint got hot and got sloppier. Mostly guessing that because everyone else has said tubes. .....
t0aj15 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 There's no way IMO tubes should fail after two days on standby, I'd definitely look elsewhere.
DetroitBlues Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 Bad power tube... I think they were used, thankfully I had a set of old ones I found but forgotten I had. Ordered a new set, should be here in the next few days.
smokedtires Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 That's good news DB. Might be a good time to put all new ones in there for that new string, (oops) tube sound
DetroitBlues Posted January 18, 2014 Author Posted January 18, 2014 That's good news DB. Might be a good time to put all new ones in there for that new string, (oops) tube sound I don't get it...
smokedtires Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I don't get it... This was in reference to replacing your bad power tube. My guitars always sound much brighter and alive when I change their strings, new tubes should breath new life into your amp. Unless of course the old tubes sing the blues better
Gillnetter Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Sounds like a bad power tube. Like someone stated earlier preamp tubes last a long time.
