Tube Screamer

Been thinking about buying a tube screamer. It seems that most dirt pedals that came after that were based on it, and a lot of people think it pairs well with strats.

What tube screamer do you recommend? If you have clips to demonstrate it, by all means, express yourself! ;)

The best I've ever used was an Analogman modded TS9. That was about 10 years ago. By my own admission, I'm not a big pedal user. In fact, I rarely ever use them although I have a fair amount of them. I also have a cheap - DeltaLabs TS9 clone that sounds just as much a TS9 than the Ibanez reissues that I've tried. The Digitech Bad monkey gets much love. But none of these are boutique pedals.

I'm not a big pedal guy either but back when I was, my main one was a UE 300, by Ibanez. It includes a tube screamer, chorus and compressor. It's the best pedal I ever had and in no small way because it has its own power supply, no wall wart, no batteries. They can be had on ebay. I sold mine in the 80's, but missed it and re-aquired one that way several years ago. When ever I need to use pedals, it's my main one.

I'm reminded of something I heard once. It went something like this...

Tube screamers are to be used only on solid state amps and distortion pedals are only to be used on tube amps.

So, with this in mind, and if true, I'm wondering what kind of amp you would use with a tube screamer if you decided to get one.

I had an Analogman modded TS9 and when Ipaired it against my OCD, I liked the OCD better. Nowadays I don't use it much because I have a dirt channel on my amps. Maybe you can borrow one to try out?

You might try an Ibanez Turbo Tube Screamer. It has a combination of TS9, TS808 and an over the top Turbo modes all in a single pedal. Look for a used one under $100.

What are the differences between TS9 and TS808 - is TS9 hotter?

With all due respect that's a load of crap. Tubescreamers sound effin' great going into a tube amp. Find yourself a good old Fender amp (or just about any decent sounding tube amp), set it just at the edge of breakup, now hit the front end hard with a Tubescreamer - you'll know why so many players like 'em and so many pedals are based off of them. They sound great into clean amps as well or for pushing high gain amps into melt down. The Tubescreamer sounds great into tube amps.

Believe it or not but I know a guy here in Central OH that has collected over 400 of those old green pedals....

So, how do you really feel about it? hahahaha

Well, I have ONE (not 400) but it is an early TS9 .... with the "correct" chip, but I don't want to make this into one of those "I can't hear the difference anyhow" threads...... :)

I've got a TS9. Works for me. I don't think its so much of a question of the amp, but the guitar. I have to set it completely different between my 140, the Legacy, and the Melancon T. i've thought of picking up a fuzz, just haven't had time to play with a bunch, but my preference in sound it either clean, or creamy smooth sustain.
