100 watt---I'm American...bigger is better right? Actually, 50 will prob do fine---what I'd really like is the ability to reduce wattage by selector switch---I have seen this option on many amps out there....from 1 watt to 5 to 20 to 50....versatility is a plus. 50 watt and 2X12 is in the sights---just gotta put a name brand on it!

Again the Fender SS 100 has a Arena/Club switch that allows you to choose 100/25 watts. My Boogie Mark IV can be 30/50/70/85 watts.

You have been watching too many ATT commercials if you think bigger is better. Think again!

I've seen that. I kinda live in yesteryear so I don't know how common that is now. I just assume that most don't.

I really want to try one of the SS amps.

Not all the SS amps have that feature, in fact the Fender SS 100 has several features the lower powered models don't have.

Ah. Well, i am far more likely to stick with my Cube regardless. I think I've grown tired of trying to beat it. Haha

I like the 550+---I'm leaning towards the Hughes and Kettner--Used Switchblade--It's Germ-Asian. I like the MIA Mesas but so expensive--can get used though for better price. Lots of diversity and reviews are typically quite good. I really liked the Bogner Ecstasy---but GEEEEEE GOLLY they are proud of that---I could make Keith Richards money and would still have think twice before paying that kind of price.

Tubes in combos get a lot more rattled than tubes in heads. You can use dameners but I'm not convinced they are worth the effort. One head and multiple cabs can be very useful.

+1 on the tube rattle and the portability/flexibility issues stated above.

50 watt. My head can go 50 or 100. We did a show once at a pretty decent sized venue in Detroit. I had my amp in 50w mode with my master vol on 5 and my gain channel vol at 6. The sound guy yelled at me during soundcheck. "hey rock star, you wanna turn down a hole?" type stuff. You will Neeever need more than 50 watts if your speaker config is decent. Same thing with recording. If I try to push it in 50w mode, the SPL's red line everything. My 20w 1x12 is plenty loud enough for any 5-200 person venue.

Over amped is a common malady

Buy a PRS amp. Very affordable. :icon_tongue: And you can help Derek and Warren make money too.

Ouch---sound check guy maybe needs to turn down his hole? Where is the love?

I think 30 watts or less and a 2x12 will be more than enough to get a guitar player through the loudest drummer.... Its not about the wattage, its about pushing air. Ever heard a 5W Tube head through a 4x12? AWESOME!!!!

Drummers side fill half way on the right hand side had my guitar louder than I had my amp!! I had to ask them to turn the fill 45degrees and out of my ears so I could get down to my preferred stage volume.

one 100w amp:

2:00 am at home while the family are asleep

Small intimate venues

Bigger out door venues.

Quieter and more effective in more situations than any little 15w amp.

Stop polluting the internet with the idea that everyone only needs a little amp. Its a nonsense. Its the most ridiculously over used myth on the web.

Love the pic of the audience with their hands thrown up in the air. That must've been a kick!

"happy" drunk teenagers are really compliant. Everything seems like a good idea to them.

But yes, I do miss playing to bigger crowds. A lot. It is good fun. I miss the energy.

+1................I couldn't agree more, just another of the seemingly endless number of myths/fallacies that permeate the web these days.

I played a 5 watt H&K yesterday briefly through a small head--sounded so-so---then through a Marshall 2X12 1936 and it sounded---AWESOME!,,,But THAT cab is like &700 bucks--Ouch on steroids! Never been a Marshall amp fan...but that cab sounded really great.

Tried the Blackstar--good but not my cup of tea--the H&K was really nice but maybe a tad thin (took my 150 w/ Seth lovers and it still seemed thin)....STILL haven't been able to try a MESA due to lack of one in the area!

SO-putting this all tog----HEAD: needs good cleans to driving distortion w/ headroom. CAB: apparently makes a diff?...GUITAR: Strat neck sound is good (or 7ish HB)--HB bridge sound is good--(prefer 13+ for bridge)....MONEY: Where does this come from?

Are we assuming the Cabinet is already at the venue? If so, the just a head.. otherwise, I have always used combo amps.. I'm now using a 12w PR Custom with a couple pedals.. super light and sounds great!!

Sorry about the smaller is better comments.. My days of hauling heavy sh#t are WAAAAAY!! Behind me!! :icon_salut:

HEAD AND CAB. 100 watt combos are beastly at best, and backbreaking at worst. Another issue is that they often don't have side handles, and are hard to maneuver. A 2x12 or 4x12 cabinet is much easier to deal with, and the head should be no problem.

Ask me how I know... I've got two 100 watt combos. One is a brick, and the other is nailed to the floor. I've also got 2 100 watt heads, and I now wish all I had were heads. I've also got a 50 watt head, a 50 watt combo, and a 16/5 watt combo. I've got a bunch of cabinets too.

Pardon me but I am really confused.. Everyone talks about how light a head is..While that is true, most Cabinets are heavy as hell.. Am I wrong?
