RhoadsScholar Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 For those of you who have done this, how much lighter can you make a 150 by changing out the tuners, bridge and tailpiece. I love my 170 LW but also like the sound of a non-chambered 150/157. If you wouldn't mind sharing your experiences (or a thread I failed to find when doing a search), it would be appreciated. Is it realistic to drop the weight 1/2 pound, a pound? Also if you could provide links to the appropriate hardware that wouldn't require modification to Heritage existing holes, threads, etc. (if that is even possible). Pictures before and after are great as well as experiences. Everyone here has always been very helpful.
H Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I doubt you'll drop the weight by as much as half a pound, never mind a full pound. However, TonePros Kluson tuners are a lot lighter than Grover Rotamatics. An extra hole is required but the existing hole is in the right spot for the other side of the gear casing. I don't think there's much weight difference between the Schaller tailpiece/bridge and other brands. You might find an aluminium (yep, I'm English!) tailpiece from Faber that might help there. I suspect it would be about the same as uncovered pickups versus covered in weight terms though.
H Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 The TonePros bridge and tailpiece I put on this 150 look better to my eye than the Schaller equipment did. I never weighed the respective parts so I can't help with weight differences. I suspect they would be minimal though.
rockabilly69 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I'd say less than a half of a pound, and most of the weight change is the tailpiece not the bridge, which is a pretty substancial difference. I will weigh my Firebird on an accurate scale, and tell you the difference. I know the starting weight, and I changed out all of the hardware to the Faber lightweight stuff.

Davec629 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I changed my Schaller to a Gotoh and it went from 7.77 to 7.70. Not even worth the mention and it sounded better with the original brass (?) tail piece.
RhoadsScholar Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 Thanks H, I like the looks of those tuners. And Rockabilly, thanks for doing a before and after. I have always been curious if you could drop a 1/2 pound changing out hardware components
RhoadsScholar Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 That's a beauty! That top is stunning...
