Davec629 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I've only had one other heritage (black h-140) and wasn't thrilled with it. The pickups were really muddy and I didn't give it a chance and traded it off. Having 4 Strats, I decided to sell one and get a Les Paul type of guitar. I had my eye on a Tokai love rock but decided to have another go at a H-140. For $699 I figured it would need work and the stock Schaller's would need changing so I ordered a set of Duncan's before I received the guitar. It showed up and to my surprise the stock pickups sound good and metered at less then 8k on both pickups. The guitar weighs in at 7.77 pounds and plays great. Sometimes you get lucky.
PunkKitty Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Great deal! That's a nice gold top. Welcome to the HOC.
buzzy Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Excellent. Definitely made to be played. Congratulations
slider313 Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Congrats on your new 140! Those are not the stock Schallers. You may also want to meter the volume pots. If they read around 500k; + or - 10%, then they're good.
DetroitBlues Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Nice 140. That's the 1st Gen. Love the sharp cutaway. Congrats.
Davec629 Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 What were the stock pickups like? It had a broken pot on it and I've got a RS Guitar works harness in it although the caps didn't work right. there's also a set of Bonamassa Duncan's it too. I just had my 5th back surgery and apparently pain medication and eBay are not a good mix as I woke up the other day the proud winner of $375 pickups. Now I'm selling a few things to make up for my mistake although they do sound pretty good.
DetroitBlues Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Nice Strats in the background. One looks like it has a cap of some sort and the other has some relic wear on it.
Davec629 Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. This guitar even sounds great unplugged. Now I'd really like to play a hollow body. Anybody want to buy a Stratocaster?
Davec629 Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 I sold the one with the cap today. A Fender Foto Flame with an Allparts neck. The Relic is a MJT relic body, Eric Johnson neck and a set of David Allen Echo's pickups.
TalismanRich Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Nice looking gold top. My H140 had a similar issue. It is an 87, and it was very muddy and dull sounding, totally the opposite of my 157 and 535 with Schallers. I wonder sometimes if there was a change in the way the pickups were wound. The 140 had uncovered pickups in it, the 157 and 535 are both covered. I put a set of SD AlnicoPro IIs in it and it sounds great now.
tulk1 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 what's the H-140P? "P" generally denotes Poplar as the body wood. Not a bad thing. Just not 'hog and maple. Did you pull the access plate to see if the pickups were listed? Standard used to be Schallers - you either like them or not. But just about any pickup can be (or could have been) ordered. Love the aged patina on the pickups in your gold top, whatever they are.
tsp17 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Nice H140 at a very good price! well done and welcome.
Davec629 Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 It's mahogany. The pickups in it now are the Duncan Bonamassa set.
Davec629 Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 On second thought, I think it is Poplar with a Mahogany neck. Still sounds good.
Redsand Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 At that price I'd be suprised if it weren't which isn't a bad thing at all, Poplar is great for rock, especially in a loud setting! It resonates like adream!
Davec629 Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 I've always believed there is more tone then just the body wood. Neck wood, scale length, etc. I do think its an ugly wood but they have stained it pretty good to hide it. The control cavity revealed it.
Davec629 Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 Would the label be "140P" if it were poplar?
tulk1 Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Would the label be "140P" if it were poplar? Yes. It would.
Davec629 Posted February 3, 2014 Author Posted February 3, 2014 What would your guess be (wood type)?
Redsand Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 Wow, It's probably Mahogany then, you got a smoking deal on that one!
DetroitBlues Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 I was under the impression, there is no such guitar as a 140P, only 150P. Anyone have a 140P?
