MartyGrass Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Not the guitarist. I recently got a 1994 Johnny Smith Custom. The Custom has the premium wood package and tap tuning by the recently deceased Aaron Cowles. The guitar had some minor cosmetic issues. Heritage and Pete Moreno remedied them. The first was tailpiece. For some reason that no one at Heritage could explain, the guy who put the tailpiece on in 1994 had the wrong size of three of the fingers. Fortunately, Heritage had a parts box with the right fingers. So that is now corrected. All of the hardware was removed. There were a few superficial scratches and dings, all restricted to the nitro. These were wet sanded, drip filled with nitro, sanded some more and buffed. The headstock face was buffed out as well. The guitar looks showroom good now. Pete cleaned 20 years off of the ebony. The frets never had wear on them but the wood had grime. For the record, it weighs exactly 5.9 lbs. It very much sounds like an acoustic guitar with a pickup as opposed to an acoustic electric such as an L5 or Super 400.

MartyGrass Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 It is amazing. How is the sound? It sounds great. I don't know what else to say. I haven't played a better sounding archtop acoustically.
peterbright Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 A perfect combination...looks and function!
MartyGrass Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 This JS is similar to one I had before that was tap tuned. The neck carve on all three was virtually identical.
bsck1 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 What a fabulous addition to your incredible collection.

schundog Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Great pics of a great guitar, Doc. I'm so glad that you appreciate these wonderful instruments for the works of art they are, and are in close enough proximity to have the master builders/luthiers like Pete and the Heritage gang bring them back to their full glory. Well done, Sir!
2bornot2bop Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Love the restoration. Love that U found a replacement for your previous JS, and that this one found a good home!
Stringman Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 Sir: That guitar looks superb and you and Heritage are to be commended for bringing it back to life. Any chance you might record/video the guitar so that we could hear it played? I'd really like that. Thanks. String
