skydog Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I just installed a set of sheptone tributes in my '06 H150 but they don't seem to want to set deep enough to clear the strings unless i raise the tailpiece higher than i prefer. Any suggestions? I just put the strings on and want to get something out of them, so I'll wait a bit to do anything.
slider313 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Heritage uses short leg baseplate pickups. PRS does also. You need to make the cavity a little deeper, just at the edge where the screw meets the bottom. I use a router bit. Another option would be ordering pickups with the short leg plates.
skydog Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 Can't use old plate as i no longer own it. Does the hole just have toclear the screw?
PunkKitty Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 The hole just has to be deep enough to clear the screw and give you enough room to adjust the pickup. You should be able to do the work with a drill.
skydog Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 That's what i was thinking; i'd feel better with a drill bit vs a router; more control!
H Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I had the same issue when I fitted a set of Burstbuckers to my 150. I used a countersink bit when I drilled - the resulting hole looks a bit nicer.
HANGAR18 Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I feel better knowing that I'm not the only one who used a drill to fit a new set of pickups into his guitar.
skydog Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 Did others also have this issue with the neck pickup only?
H Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Did others also have this issue with the neck pickup only? Yep, the route for the neck pickup is slightly shallower due to the 'dish' carve on the maple top.
peterbright Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 Don't drill through the back of the guitar
tbonesullivan Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 what were the stock pickups in the guitar? If they were SD '59s or Seth lovers, those have long legs, and they would be drilled out for those already. If it was schaller, HRW, or another type of SD pickups, the routing won't be deep enough.
skydog Posted February 7, 2014 Author Posted February 7, 2014 I can't say for sure; it came to me with a pearly gates installed.
goSteelers Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I had to take out a bit of wood when I changed out Schallers on an H160. I used a Dremel because I thought it gave me more control, less chance of "taking off", compared to a drill.
tbonesullivan Posted February 7, 2014 Posted February 7, 2014 I can't say for sure; it came to me with a pearly gates installed. Pearly gates are short leg pickups. What did you think of them? I had for a time considered putting some in my H535.
skydog Posted February 8, 2014 Author Posted February 8, 2014 They didn't sound right for this particular guitar
HANGAR18 Posted February 8, 2014 Posted February 8, 2014 They didn't sound right for this particular guitar If you still have the Pearly Gates pickups, I have a pair of Gibson 490r & 490t pickups I'd be willing to trade for.
skydog Posted February 9, 2014 Author Posted February 9, 2014 Wouldn't the newly removed area need to be the size of the base of the leg "foot", not just the screw?
PunkKitty Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 It depends on how much room you have to work with. You have to make sure that you can raise and lower the pickup easily. It will vary from guitar to guitar.
skydog Posted February 11, 2014 Author Posted February 11, 2014 I drilled some material from the cavity and there's clearance however the screws are at the last threads on the leg. Are there longer screws available? What is the thread size?
PunkKitty Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 You can just buy a set of humbucker screws online. They are a standard size. Mojotone sells them.
skydog Posted February 12, 2014 Author Posted February 12, 2014 Well, I feel like a dork! Note to self: label everything! When i went to reassemble the guitar, I put the longer pup screws in the bridge pup. This pup had plenty of clearance. Once I switched the screws around, both had plenty of adjustability. A little tweaking of the bridge height, and a final adjusting of pup heights and all will be good. Thanks everyone for the help, especially PunkKitty!
peterbright Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 You are now officially as stupid as I am...did the same thing once...now I'm going to slap my head.
