The place is busy whenever I go in there. It doesn't seem to matter when. Chicagoans are loyal to their local businesses. And I have seen some good deals there. It's THE go to place in the Chicago area if you are looking for something vintage or really special. Anyone can try anything. Want to say you played a '59 LP? You can do it there. It really is a special place.

Exactly. Or if you've got the scratch and an inkling for an old Tele, you've got a couple dozen to choose from there.

This last time I was there they were packaging an LP that had sold an hour earlier for $110,000.00. Several years ago I was the chauffeur for booker t and the Mg's for a 4 day weekend. Every time Booker, cropper or dunn left the hotel it was in my Mazda. Booker T was in the studio with drive by truckersbat the time and was GASsing for a LP. I was standing there while waiting for bookers wife and daughter to come down when cropper says "you gotta do it while your here, CME's 'right up the street"

That'd be Steve Cropper. You may have heard of him. And this was on recall, not after asking around. Its mecca, depending on you tax bracket and expectations.

Regardless of any of that, in my view its outstanding that they've chosen to display Heritage guitars in this manner in that shop. And it only helps the resale of our little babies.

Whoo-eee, That's a mighty cool group of cats to be chauffeuring around……..even if it was in a Mazda :tongue3: Cool story, thanks for the share!

Exactly! Besides just imagine the Colonel Cropper getting into the store and checking out these two beauties...

Maybe I caught CME on a bad day, but I thought their policy on playing guitars was ridiculous. I was there on a Friday at Noon and the place was empty. I asked to check out a Nash tele into a Victoria 5E3; no problem and I'm off to one of the small amp rooms. Cool, I thought, a little room where I can play into a number of different amps in there with some sound isolation. Except none of the Victorias were plugged in; the only amp out of the 6 in there that were operational was an AC30. The cords were a rat's nest and I asked about getting it sorted; the guy hands me the Tele and says "oh yeah" and disappears. So I plug into the AC30 and play for a few minutes.

My helpful salesman comes back and asks me to turn it down; really? Dude, its an AC30 (pretty hard to whisper with any kind of decent tone) and the Vicky's are a mess in here; "oh yeah" he says. I ask "aren't these rooms soundproofed?" He says no. I ask then what is the point of the rooms.

I guess their premium stuff sells itself, but they would have to try pretty hard to win my business back.

Or perhaps all the employees were hungover from the Thursday night before?

That is weird. My kids go to the gym next door so I pay them a visit almost every Saturday. Never had a similar experience.

I've been there many, many times. The rooms are almost soundproof. You can only hear them through the glass door. Outside of that, it's relatively quiet in the store. I've never had problems there.

Well, I for one, think that you should show you are interested in buying and have the funds to buy a guitar before you are allowed to play it. It drives me CRAZY when some 14 yr old wants to just noodle on a $3.5K LP or PRS for hours that he has no intention of buying. If you want to jam, then go to a local jam, not the music store where maybe I want to buy something. And I include myself....if I can't afford a $20k Tele or a $250k LP, I am not going to play it and risk a ding or damage to a guitar I never intended on buying. I think this is why you see the bad attitude for store owners.

I would bet if high-end music stores charged an hourly rent to play an instrument, with that amount subtracted on a purchase, you would have a whole lot less noise in music/guitar stores!!!!

Question: How do you stop a guitarist from playing in Guitar Center?

Answer: Put sheet music in front of him/her!!!

I third the motion. The folks there are very patient, especially when you consider that they there is no way they could possibly keep an eye on all the folks in there and all the guitars they have on display. I wonder if they have some type of insurance to cover the tire kickers?
