peterbright Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 First one: Short Scale, single floater, Sitka over Hog on order. My thoughts on a second one: Short Scale. All Maple, 2 set in Seth Lovers. Your thoughts would be welcome (negative or positive).
Kuz Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Isn't the 2nd one just like a Custom 575? My Custom 575 has an ebony fretboard (I have never seen another Custom 575 with an ebony fretboard). I realize the rim width would be a little thicker on an Eagle, but a Custom 575 with just adding an ebony fretboard could save you a couple thousand dollars!
jazzrat Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 The 575 Custom I sold here last year had an ebony board. Very nice indeed.
Ned Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Not to distract the thread, but my custom 575 has ebony FB and spruce over mahogany. Couldn't be happier.
Gitfiddler Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 A Custom Super Eagle, short scale (24.75) would not be the same as a Custom 575, even with an ebony fretboard. First of all the Super would have an 18" bout, multiple bindings (everywhere), possibly a Cupid's Bow at the base of the neck, and all of the upgraded Eagle inlays. Peter, whatever you add to your second custom SE, it is going to be killer. You seem to know what you want and what appeals to your style of playing. What options are you seeking in addition to the short scale? Choice Wood Package? Special Pickups? Custom Inlays? NO Inlays? Six-Finger Tailpiece?
peterbright Posted February 25, 2014 Author Posted February 25, 2014 I really like the Seth Lovers I have in my Millennium.
Steiner Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 I don't see how a short scale SE would be close to a 575 Custom. The Eagle has a much larger and thinner top. Even with the same bracing, you'd have a much different voice. I think it's a cool idea peterbright. As Gitfiddler posted above, please fill us in on your design.
peterbright Posted February 25, 2014 Author Posted February 25, 2014 Getting a quote from Wolfe Guitars...they changed my mind about the top to spruce. So it would be spruce over maple, Vintage Wineburst, 2 set in Seth Lovers with 2 tone and 2 volume controls, Eagle Classic style single white bindings, bound F holes, Ebony unbound fretboard with split block inlays, unbound peghead with Super Eagle inlays and truss rod cover, 24.75" scale, chrome hardware, finger tailpiece
Guitarbean Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 where will the input jack be? strap button or on the side?
peterbright Posted February 27, 2014 Author Posted February 27, 2014 I didn't specify the location as either is fine with me. I have 2 of each at the moment.
17571 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I just ordered a custom golden eagle set up like an x braced 17" Kenny Burrell concert model using my HRW pickup with a 25" rather than a 25.5" scale.. I ordered thru Jay Wolfe who informed me a few days later, that Heritage refused to do a 25" scale and would give me a $100.00 dollar reduction in price to keep the scale 25.5". They were so determined that it appeared they were prepared to accept a cancellation rather than do a shorter scale. This was just last week, so I don't believe anything has changed. Jay stated that they have been doing special order short scales for years and couldn't understand the refusal? Just thought I'd let you know you may have a problem ordering a short scale change on an instrument.
58super Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Perhaps the split block inlays of the Burrell model won't work on a 25" scale?
17571 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Could be. Jay stated he had a lengthily discussion with Bill and Marv and the reason for the refusal never really came up, so who knows. Jay did tell me he has ordered many short scale full body models over the years and there was never a problem until now.
17571 Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Could be. Jay stated had a lengthily conversation with Bill and Marv over this issue and the reason for the denial was really never disclosed. Jay informed me that he has ordered several short scale supers over the years and a short scale had never been a problem until now with mine.
H Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 What is 'short scale' by their definition? 24.75in? Less? In my limited experience of guitars, I've only seen a 25in scale used by PRS. Is it a common scale length on jazz guitars?
Kuz Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Something fishy is going on... Jay (your dealer) should be able to give a reason why they won't build a 25" scale archtop. So he had a lengthy conversation with Marv & Jim and THEY DID EXPLAIN WHY NOT???!!! I am not telling what to do, but what I would do is insist that Jay find a reason why. It may be that Heritage just doesn't want to build a 25" scale because they are tooled up for 24.75 & 25.5, but at least Heritage & Jay owe you an explanation. I am just going to say that Heritage (especially Marv) are always upfront, even if it is to the point that "they don't want to do it". But no reason given from your dealer when he was on the phone with them.... Something is smells fishy to me.
heritagefan7 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I hope that you are able to get it built Peter---It sound like a great build.
peterbright Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 Me too...Wolfe has not mentioned any problems with it.
peterbright Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 Got the quote on the second Super Eagle build and "no problems" with the 24 3/4" scale and it is officially on order.
Spectrum13 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I went through this with my long scale 575 with split blocks. Hugh delay getting the fingerboard. I did not get split blocks 24 3/4. Heritage sources their blocked fingerboards from Brian England Inlays. As of late (2012) ordering anything not in regular use like split block 24 3/4 just never gets shipped. The way Jim explained it.. could come in in 12 weeks or never. I you want dots or no inlays, Heritage makes them in house. Ray is gone so I don't know who does the frets and custom work now. I would say this is a supply chain availability issue and Marv & Jim stopped waiting for the one off boards that never come.
17571 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I spoke with Jay again this morning (Monday) after seeing these comments. Jay says all Bill and Marv would say is "no", they don't want to do it. Jay reminded them that they've been doing a shorter scale than standard for many years, on all their models. Again Jay told me they won't do a shorter than standard scale. It'll be int3eresting to see if you get a short scale accepted, if you do Jay will have some :"splanin to do".
17571 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Okay the latest.... You will get your 24.75 scale, it is only the 25" scale Bill and Marv refuse to now do for some unknown reason. They did a 25" Johnny smith Rose for ten years, and after losing the endorsement, they continued to build many special order 25" scale eagle size instruments. For some unexplained reason the 25" scale is no longer available at Heritage ( at least for my order).
