jimsoloway Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I'm working on one recording tests with the new log scale H575. Part of this is just dialing in a new recording setup, testing various amps recording with a mic & preamp/interface vs recording with a modeler etc. I thought since a lot of you guys went through the build process, you might enjoy this as well. I'll almost certain repeat a handful of passages throughout the process. I did this just now running through a VHT Special Six. I recorded it with an Audio Tech AT2021 and a Tascam US-144mkII. The Tascam is clearly the weak link in this system. It's impossible to get rid of the hiss but it's easy to use. [soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/jim-soloway/heritage-h575-long-scale[/soundcloud]
jimsoloway Posted February 27, 2014 Author Posted February 27, 2014 Nicely played and sounds GREAT... Thanks Ron. Here's the next recording. It's the same VHT Special 6 but this time it's driving a Raezers Edge Stealth 10 cab. [soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/jim-soloway/heritage-h575-long-scale-2[/soundcloud]
MrB Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Jim, Beautiful guitar. I particularly like the highs, plenty of brightness, unlike the duller mid-bottom-heavy sound of a lot of guitars. Crystalline, but not brittle. Mr B
skydog52 Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I love the Voice of that guitar. Nice build and nice playing!
jimsoloway Posted February 27, 2014 Author Posted February 27, 2014 Thanks guys. I should probably have also mentioned for anyone who didn't follow the whole story that this guitar is permanently tuned down a minor third to C#.
Vanschoyck Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Almost simulates the sound of 7 string maybe? (Without the complexity of the additional string?) It sounds great. I'd like to know more about how the guitar came out - is there a completed photo on another thread?

I'd like to know more about how the guitar came out - is there a completed photo on another thread? I played 7-string for abut 8 years, so there's definitely a draw to the low end for me. Here's a link to the original tread. The photos and the first clip are on page three. Long scale H575 custom build update
MartyGrass Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I listen to the sound files and I hear Jim Soloway! You have more of a new age style than standard chord melody jazz. That is, you have more sustain and brightness. Of course your bottom end is big (no offense). I've always enjoyed your tone and style. I can detect the temporal expansion of the notes that come from an archtop. It is subtle in an amplified instrument, but definitely there. It's like a minimal woody reverb. I'm curious what strings you use and how you pluck the strings. How do you adapt to a world that's in standard tuning? I'm working in pieces in Db and in Eb. If I were down tuned a step and a half my brain would explode. I'm glad you're happy with your H575.
jimsoloway Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 Thanks Marty. It's not strung all that heavy. I play very lightly and I don't need a lot of tension. I'm using Thomastik Infeld Swing Series 12's and they're just 12 to 50. I was a bit surprised I could get away with a sting that light for the low C#. On my planks I was USING GHS Brite Flat 12's plus a GHS Nickel Compound 54 for the low C# but the TI 50 intonates just fine that low. My picking style is a bit unusual. My arm comes over the waist instead of coming over the lower bout. My right forearm floats over the strings with no anchor at all. I use all five fingers and I get a blend of nail and flesh with everything other than my pinky which is pretty much all nail. I play quite a ways forward, almost exclusively from the screws in the neck pickup to over the bottom three frets of the fingerboard. My arm rarely moves from that position and I don't generate much force at all. It's really about being as controlled with my right hand as I can.
jimsoloway Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about coping with the tuning. I don't transpose when I play. I refer to everything as it would appear on a normal guitar. So fir instance, the fifth fret on the 6th string is actually C but I refer to it as A just like I would in standard tuning. Since I'm almost always playing solo, I don;t have to worry about communicating any of this to other players and when I teach or do demos, I use a guitar in standard tuning that I keep specifically for that purpose.
gpuma Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 What a wonderful sound! I love the sound of this guitar and your playing is really classy even though the sound clips are very short (and leave the listener wanting for more)
PunkKitty Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 That's a great sounding guitar, Jim. I like your playing.
Genericmusic Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Exceptional tonal quality and masterfully played.
