rstein Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 I am still working out the details on my custom H 157 and I am trying to figure out what pickups to use. I need something that has some nuts on it for down picking (Metallica) but also sound good for Jazz. I have a pair of HRW that I know sound good for Jazz but not sure about the heavier stuff. Could use some help. Thanks.
Yooper Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 A "Metallica/Kenny Burrell" PU would indeed be a treat. Maybe I'm alone out here, but the SD '59s do the trick as a "jack of all trades" for any style for me. I used to be bothered that they didn't have the smooth warm sound of A2 magnets. But since my other guitar('57 RI) has A2s, I've learned to really like the '59s with A5s as the perfect alternative. Of course my experience is limited, so try as many pups as you can.
SouthpawGuy Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 HRWs take gain very well, they don't become muddy or indistinct.

donkeegan Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I'm with Yooper on the SD 59s. I play a variety of music and they never let me down!!
RhoadsScholar Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I will trade you a pair of sd 59's and kick in some cash for your hrws s if you are thinking of going that route. I happen to like hrw s for classic rock but not for Metallica type metal (my opinion)emg 's might be another good choice for you. 81/85 pair

The Emg JH's are designed to be a hybrid of Active and passive pickups. Also I am looking to get a natural top and I don't think nickel black would go with it.
holyroller Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I use the hrw , easlly covers what you want it to do.
SouthpawGuy Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Check out the HRW distortion tones from 20:00 and HRW bridge p'up tones from this 157, at about 23:00 I don't have HRWs in a 157 myself but I do have them in a Millennium and a VIP2 ( a Heritage '80s superstrat ). The clarity is there even with oodles of gain.
