Bob54 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 It's time to restring my Golden Eagle and all I've got in the drawer are flatwounds. As I usually play the guitar acoustically, I want something bright and resonant that will still work with the pickup. I do have a set of Ernie Ball Not Even Slinkys with an 11 top that looks good. What do you guys use? Thanks. Bob
H Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Thomastik Infeld 12s. Flatwound but still brighter than I thought they'd be
MartyGrass Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 In the Jazz Guitar Forum, the most popular is D'Addario Chrome FWs. TI FWs are the second most popular. Most in that forum use amplification. The general consensus is that TIs are brighter, likely due to the round core of the string. I like them.
peterbright Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 How bright do you want it to be? You can use regular acoustic strings and get really bright.
Kuz Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Thomastik Infeld 12s. Flatwound but still brighter than I thought they'd be These, only these for me!!!!
tbp0701 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I don't have a Golden Eagle, but I decided to try DR Dragon Skins on my acoustic and am really impressed. I only tried coated strings once before and didn't much care for them, and these are much different. Sadly, however, the don't look or feel anything like dragon skin. Guess you can't have it all. Wait, unless dragons are made of phosphor bronze. Whoa. (I think it's time I slept). Anyway, I've also been happy with John Pearse and D'Addarios.
houndhome Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I use Daddario acoustic groundwounds on my GE,but it has a K&K pickupm fitted under the top, so I'm using acoustic type strings, wouldnt work with a guitar fitted with a magnetic pickup. My Super Eagle with mag pickups uses Daddario flatwounds
Frank67 Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 Regular d'Addario 13's will do well IMHO, both accoustically and electrically. I have now put on chromes on my GE which give an electric tone that I like even better.
Guitarbean Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 My guitar teacher who's a pretty active and gigging jazz musician uses GHS nickel rockers and thinks those are a good hybrid between warm and bright. That said, he has a pretty dynamic pick action range, uses thick and "warm" picks, and plays through a Henriksen
Teeky Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I use Thomastik Infeld 12s on my GE (13s on next change. Love 'em. D'Addarios I found used to tarnish very quickly and soon slowed you down for quick chord solo work. I'm not Spartacus btw - oh that's another thread!
NoSnowBlower Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 T.I. jazz... T.I. bebop. Go with a heavy gauge. You may like the bebops' better. Very finely wound rounds.
Ned Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 TI bebop 12 on my sixteen. Sweet tone, balanced at the pickup and very long lived. The price works out fine definitely last 3x DHS boomers.
