bolero Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 So you say vintage specs means a big neck? that is a MYTH!!! I had seen real late 50's Les Pauls and they don't have the big necks that people think they have. Real 59 neck is a no shoulder rounder shape neck but not as deep as what people think and even the 58 is still same kinda round profile but not deep!! I remember those REAL late 50's les pauls having neck only a tad deeper than the early 90's les paul classic which was supposed to be a 60's neck!! interesting! I think there must have been some variance...I played a friend's '58 that had a big neck
redshark Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 My experience with real 50's Gibsons is: 58 and 59 standard, 58 explorer, 55 custom, 55 LPjr. and a friend just played a 55 goldtop and none of those guitars had a big neck. The roundest one was the jr.I should say deeper, but none had the thick feel in the neck that "historics" have (shoulder). I asked my friend who loves big necks and knows the profile I like about the 55 goldtop if it had a big neck and he said..."not at all, you would love that one" . He also has experienced that and other 50's and we came to the realization that it's just a myth.
kidsmoke Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 this is actually somewhat consistent with what our man DB has been lamenting. Heritage's version of a "big neck" doesn't go as deep as some would like. Given that Marv actually rolled necks on Parsons Street in '59, maybe there is something to that. I for one have never had the honor to play a 50's Gibson. My 2012 150 matches the deepest neck I've played on a Heritage or Gibson, but is not at deep as some Fender type guitars I own/have played. Is it possible that one mans "baseball bat" neck is another mans Vintage Carve, and that neither is as beefy as the Fender benchmark set with the NoCaster's of yore?
MrPoobah Posted March 7, 2014 Author Posted March 7, 2014 I never think of 50s necks a large as the baseball bat necks on some 50s Fenders but I have played a couple of 50s les pauls and their necks were definitely bigger than the slim taper on a late model standard. I'm sure there are variances as they were all made by hand.
Trouble Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 OSB, big neck, '59 in the neck and pearly gates in the bridge, and some honest relicing on it now. (old pic)
Trouble Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Pic from today of my favorite guitar of all, a little more wear, a little rust on the PU covers, a few internal mods like treble bleed and new caps, and 2 fret levels and a new nut (all done by me). This thing gets played a lot. The spots in the pic aren't bad lighting, the hazy spots are worn into the finish could maybe be buffed out but whats the point, and the spot touching the binding on the upper bought actually caused bleeding before I took a little sandpaper to it.

Now that is a WELL loved guitar!
zguitar71 Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Does it get any more "vintage" than a Gold Top? Well I guess a 157 in black with a p90 and an alnico parallels the Gold Top
Trouble Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 Now that is a WELL loved guitar! I've owned at least 50 guitars over the years and have 12 or 15 really nice ones now but most don't see daylight very often, this 150 is my guitar.

glaister Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 it's a '94, so a medium neck, but I suppose it's vintage spec otherwise? Wolfetone Legend PAF's Pigtail steel studs & inserts lightweight aluminum tailpiece ABR-1 bridge cherry sunburst it is a killer H150 Lovely colour burst !
big bob Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 There are some good looking 150's in this thread... Yes Sir!
peterbright Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Never bought that baseball bat is needed theory
yoslate Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 This is my 20th Anniversary. About nine pounds, with Tom Short Marc Ford Tombuckers. She's a working girl, with some laugh lines, but what a player!! What a voice!!
rockabilly69 Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Both guitars have Faber ABR Bridges and inserts, Faber lightweight tailpiece and inserts, RS Guitarworks CTS pots and Jensen PIO caps. The Wineburst is 9lbs 4oz and is equipped with Seymour Duncan shop Peter Green pickups, and the light burst has Custom Zhangbucker pickups and is 9lbs on the nose. Both great guitars.
rockabilly69 Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Oh yeah...the wineburst with the SD Peter Green Custom Shop pickups doesn't have the flipped magnet, and the lighter burst with the custom Zhangbucker pickups are based on his "Pagey" model but with slightly more output on the bridge pickup!
H Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Thanks H, you know I love yours too:) What an incestuous bunch we are here!
yoslate Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 What a pair of beauties, Dan! Thanks H, you know I love yours too:) I was going to chime in, too, as I really dig both of yours. But then it'd start to look like a three-way.... Not going there...with you guys.
