jimsoloway Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Here's something to kick off the weekend ... I'm still experimenting with how to best record the new long scale H575. I picked up a Steinberg UR22 interface. That allows me to record two sources at the same time so I've been experimenting with blending a mic on the guitar itself with various plugged in tones. Here's a few short examples. Nothing new or radical in the playing and none of them are perfect but I like the progress I'm making with the recording technique. https://soundcloud.com/jim-soloway/ur22test3 https://soundcloud.com/jim-soloway/steinberg-ur22-interface-test

ScottNaylor Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Thanks for these, Jim. I really like the last one as it allows your articulation of the melody line to stand clear tonally. It sounds as if two guitars are playing - a testament to your technique both as a musician and recording engineer. Sounds like the new Heritage is settling in nicely!
iim7v7im7 Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 Are you using a small diaphragm cardoid condenser mike on the guitar? If so, where are you pointing it? I assume you are dynamic miking your Evans as well, correct? I am asking because I am headed down that same route and I am curious about your technique.

I'm using an Audio Technica 2021 on the guitar (yes, a small diaphragm carded condenser). Unfortunately it's the only mic I have so I;m having to do work arounds on the amp side. From top to bottom (all mixed with the mic) clip 1 is the Pod HD running a modified Flip Top patch clip 2 Evans RE200 preamp line out clip 3 the same Pod patch as #1 with a bit more bass added clip 4 the guitar direct into the UR22 High Z input After having done all of this my first thought it that I really need to add a second mic and I may consider returning the interface and upgrading to four inputs. I really like the direction this is going but I think it would be even nicer if I had more choices to blend together.
jimsoloway Posted March 15, 2014 Author Posted March 15, 2014 And SouthPaw, thanks for the kind word And Scott, yes, the guitar is settling in wonderfully. Even more important to me, it is doing exactly what I was hoping for. It has added a significant new dynamic to my sound and it plays exactly like it was supposed to thanks to the accuracy of the neck carve to the specs I provided. I keep coming back to that but I guess it was more important to me than I had realized. the folks at Heritage just did a brilliant job on the neck and it's made the transition to this guitar infinitely easier for me.
iim7v7im7 Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 I am going to try a dynamic microphone on the Evans and a condenser pointed at the f-hole of the archtop or at the 12-fret to get a amp/guitar mix...
