brentrocks Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I have never seen VSB on a jazz box.....that is super cool
peterbright Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 How do you like the pickup? Can you compare it to others you have had in Eagles?
Kuz Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Do you still own any of your Kenny Burrell's guitars or your SEs? What do you have left in the stable? You are BrentRocks of arch tops, hope you are enjoying these new ones.

Gitfiddler Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 A Blues, and Route 66, with a 1996 Russell Malone and Diana Krall: Russell Malone on a '70's Ibanez 'lawsuit' archtop...AMAZING!
2bornot2bop Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 How do you like the pickup? Can you compare it to others you have had in Eagles? I did a fresh setup y'day with my strings, TI Swing flat 13's. This floater is on the dark side, compared to a Heritage number 3, and even a KA handwound, which I've had in both humbucker and floating configuration. This Benedetto floater is much like a Bartolini 5J floater. Each possessing a natural woody tone, that sound less electric. Nice pup. I'm liking it a lot. No. Being retired, and lately having resigned myself not to hoard archtops any more, I've no more than 3 archtops in house at any time. If I want to sample something else, something has to go. Tough choices, but that's the compromise I make in order to sample some of everything that's relatively affordable. If I'd kept many of those other archtops I'd never have been in the position to sample a Super 400, or an L5WesMo and a L5CES....that is the discipline. Currently I have a Guild Artist Award, a L5CES, and now the GE. 3's company.
MartyGrass Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 It's very difficult to describe the sound of a pup or anything else really unless you compare it to another sound. Even then it is incomplete. My Benedetto pup has more mids than the Heritage #3. It retains the highs and lows. The logical consequence of this is that the notes are less distinct. Benedetto found the balance between maximum warmth with not too much mud. The Heritages tend to be lower output pups and have better articulation but slightly scooped mids. So the Heritage balance point favors virtually no mud. My Sweet 16 is the only exception I found in that it has more mids and is closer to the Benedetto. These qualities can be changed to some degree by raising and lowering the pup. It's a little harder on the floaters but is do-able. The real question for 2B is how does orange sound? Vanschoyck Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 The real question for 2B is how does orange sound? Now that I get! I've always found that orange sounds a little reddish with a some yellow mixed in.

Kuz Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 It's very difficult to describe the sound of a pup or anything else really unless you compare it to another sound. Even then it is incomplete. This is my vote for post of the year!!! So many people think they know what a pickup, guitar, amp, speaker, ect sounds like in a vaccum. It might even sound very good. But it is impossible to "compare" tones without having a referrence (two tones to compare). I get grilled on this forum for saying "I can hear differences...." but I am comparing TWO or more components. Unless you are comparing those new pups to a source with the old ones you are only being more subjective and going from memory. I just got done playing my Nocaster & Kirn Tele. If I played either alone, I would say "yep, sounds like a Tele". But played side by side they sound completely different; the Nocaster is gritter & has more bass & bite, the Kirn is smoother and has more mids. ANYONE could hear the difference, but only when compared side by side.

This GE truly is a gem...next to the Ebony GE it's the best I've owned.

2bornot2bop Posted March 23, 2014 Author Posted March 23, 2014 Do you still own that Ebony GE? That was a very unique archtop. I miss that one the most. It went to a collegiate jazz studies major whose dad bought it as a Xmas gift....that softened the blow of having to move it. I believe Ms. Black Tie affair, as I dubbed her, went after the acquisition of a Bourgeois A-350...but frankly, I can't be exactly certain what replaced that archtop....oh wait...a Heritage Super Kenny Burrell replaced that Ebony.
