jimsoloway Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I was messing about with the tuning on the long scale 575 this morning and took it down another semitone to C natural. The guitar seem to really like it, at least from a feel standpoint. It finally had the looser feel that I was used to from my Goslings and from the Peerless all tuned to C#. Here's a short demo complete with some hiss, some background noise and an unEQ'd low end.https://soundcloud.com/jim-soloway/h575-long-scale-tuned-down-to
jimsoloway Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 I like that a lot, Jim. Thanks. Now if I can just figure out why my computer has become so flakey for recording. It's really been a source of frustration for a while and I think it may take a new drive and some more memory to get over it.
ScottNaylor Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 That sounds wonderful! It's almost like the wood of that particular instrument is more simpatico with that tuning. Just a gorgeous combination of bell chime and wood resonance in the midrange. Looking forward to hearing more of this on your new album, Jim!
jazzrat Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 Still pretty Jim but it sounds a little like there are additional overtones at that tuning and you might have lost some note definition and clarity on the low end. I thought your previous recordings at C# were spectacular sounding.
jimsoloway Posted April 1, 2014 Author Posted April 1, 2014 Here's another one with a lot better recording (or at least a lot less noise). https://soundcloud.com/jim-soloway/h575-c-natural-tuning-test-2
buzzy Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Beautiful. It certainly is full. I think the low end is more 'round' and provides a subdued, supportive role for the movement - if that makes sense. Anyway, it's very good in my opinion.
peterbright Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 That is definately much more melodic to my ears!
MartyGrass Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I'm a fan of drop D, but you got that beat. Why not go all the way and get a 7 string?
jimsoloway Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 I'm a fan of drop D, but you got that beat. Why not go all the way and get a 7 string? I played 7-string from about 1998 to 2006 or 2007. There were always a lot of trade-offs with a 7-string that I didn't like. A down tuned 6 string gives me the warmth and size without any of the hassle.
