Billgelder Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 A guitar student and friend of mine offered me a very reasonable price for my PRS Starla with P90s. I use this guitar on stage for open tuning and slide. It is my only P90 guitar. I have learned over the years the best time to sell is when someone is waving cash in front of your face. In the past I have thought “maybe I will keep it a little while longer or hold out for a better price,” only to regret my decision later. So I sold the Starla. Now I don’t have a P90 guitar. Damn it, I am going to have to buy a new guitar. What to do, what to do? I have always wanted to get a pair of P-Rails with Triple Shot. I thought about putting them in my H-357 when I ordered it, but Daniel (rockabiily69) talked me into the Lollar Firebird pickups. This was the right decision; thank you Daniel. I saw Monica (PunkKitty) was selling a set at a good price, so I bought them. Lance (big bob) had a 1992 H-140 for sale, so I called him and made a deal for it without the pickups or the Bisby. I also have an old Bill Lawrence L-500 lead from 1980 (4 wire), and that would work for the middle pickup. See “Need help getting a wiring diagram” for more details, http://www.heritageownersclub.com/forums/topic/26524-need-help-getting-a-wiring-diagram/?do=findComment&comment=367760 I wired it up yesterday with some advice from Mark (Mars_hall). Thanks to Mark I got it right on the 1st try. It sounds fantastic, and is very versatile with this pickup combination. I’m going to calling it “Punk Bob” or “Big Kitty”Last night I did some recording with the H-140, but my recording computer died this morning. So the sound clips are going to be delayed for a little while.
PunkKitty Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 It looks great, Bill. I'm interested to hear what you think about the combination of the PRails and the L-500.
schundog Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Very Cool, Bill, congratulations! Sounds like this worked out for everybody. Looking forward to the sound clips.
SouthpawGuy Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Did you intentionally reverse the neck pickup ?
Billgelder Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 Did you intentionally reverse the neck pickup ? I reverse both pickup.
SouthpawGuy Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 I see, have you tried the p'ups both ways ? I've heard it improves the tone of the rail portion, haven't tried it myself though.
StephenK Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 How does the switching positions work? I dig this rigs set-up.
Doc3 Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 That is a nice set-up and will look forward to hearing a demo.
Billgelder Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 How does the switching positions work? I dig this rigs set-up. This is from the Seymour Duncan web site http://www.seymourduncan.com/images/products/electric/humbuckers/triple_shot_diagram.pdf
Hfan Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Congrats, came together nicely. It looks vaguely familiar And the wood is 22 years old, I like that.
DavesNotHere Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I've always loved the color of that one and have been intrigued by the three pickup configuration. Congratulations on a great snatch!
rockabilly69 Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Well that looks like a proper rocking machine!
bobmeyrick Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 That's one versatile guitar! I have a pair of P-Rails in my 150 Special, with the Triple Shots, and they give a lot of tonal options. Of course Triple Shots can be used with any 4-conductor humbucker, not just P-Rails.
