duaneallen Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I've noticed that the newer Heritages that I play have nice thick necks compared to the ones from the 90s, which are thin. Does anyone know around which year did they start consistently start making them with thicker necks? I know that they can vary, due to being made by hand, but I notice that they all started getting thicker at some point. Thanks.
Yooper Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 All I know is my '08 150 neck is thicker than my '06 150 neck. I should bring my micrometer to PSP for a wider survey.
tulk1 Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 From PSPIII, according to Ren: As the orders for fatter custom neck sizes increased, and they were making more slightly fatter necks than the standard, they decided to increase the standard size. That would have been 2010. So, I'd think it's safe to say it's been in the past 4-5 yrs.
redshark Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 If a neck is deep is ok but what they need to stop doing is the sides (shoulder) that make them feel thick. Not even 59 Les Pauls had that prominent shoulder. To me makes the neck uncomfortable.
mtpatty Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 my '99 has a nice thin neck...my '05 has a thick neck... i prefer the '99
Redsand Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 My 2009 H535 is on the fatter side. I believe 2008-09 is when (.800 at the 1st) the thicker neck profile became status quo.
FredZepp Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 My 2000 H-150 is a medium C shape, pretty much what I'd consider a '59 profile, the '92 and '94 are thinner. But the '88 H-150 is really fat and the '88 Parsons Street is pretty fat also. The '89 140 is fairly chunky. And, of course, at any time a dealer could order his stock or a customer order a custom order with any profile they choose.... The Gibson neck that I found at the plant, from a pre-historic era re-issue is about the same as my 2000 model, though the Heritage may be a bit thicker at the nut. (As noted in another thread, the current Gibby historics are much thicker necks than the actual vintage instruments were as a rule.)
HANGAR18 Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 If a neck is deep is ok but what they need to stop doing is the sides (shoulder) that make them feel thick. I agree.
rstein Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 They can be ordered to whichever spec you like. I had Ren make me a custom neck based on my hand measurement.
Kuz Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I think after the fire in early 2007, Heritage took on Vince and started reevaluating some of there components and standard features. They upgraded their pots, moved away from Schaller hardware, and generally started making thicker fatter necks. Generally speaking, standard Heritage guitars will have fatter necks from 2007- present vs prior to 2007.

rockabilly69 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Did you ever hear Marv's take on the fingerboard? ..... Please tell!!
tulk1 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Please tell!! It went sort of like this. So, did he tell you about making custom neck sizes? Did he show you his finger board? Uh huh! .............. and walked away. .............

But I think you'd also find most 2001 necks are thicker than 1991 necks... which is to say that the early 90's were the period of the thinnest neck profiles as a rule. ( and I like them )
Gitfiddler Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 As with many aspects of Heritage, there are exceptions. Every H155 or Millie I've played had a thin neck. That turned me off to that model. Admittedly, I've not played one of the newer Millennium Pro models that came out a couple of years ago...but I'd sure like to!
