cosmitron Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Just got this little beast at home. It plays and feels wonderful and I'm not even considering changing the stock pups. (yet) Will post more pics and words soon.
GASguy Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 A beautiful color and great flame in the top, congratulations!
cosmitron Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 Thank you guys! Here's another shot: Looks like the previous owner changed the tailpiece for a chrome plated zamak Gibson and a Japanese ABR1. Even before the pickups, this is what I'd like to change. I'm considering several options, but I'm basically looking for aluminium nickel plated tailpiece and possibly an alternative for the bridge. The guitar has marks of her 24 years of use so I'd like to find a bridge set that matches her age. Any suggestion? I'm also considering a set of Manlius Fat Diane as a replacement for the stock Schaller pups. Any thoughts?
Redsand Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 All kidding aside, the photos are FANTASTIC!!! Congrats on a gorgeous instrument. I'd like to see more of your work.
slider313 Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Congrats! I love the color, with the flame and the mineral flecks showing through. If it's my guitar, I order a TonePros locking stop tail and bridge and a set of Lindy Fralin Pure PAF's with a 5% underwound neck.
davesultra Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Not often I like blue guitars. That one I like a lot. Congrats!
PaGator Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Very nice. I'm not normally a blue guitar guy but that one could change my mind
glaister Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Have a look at Crazyparts for a bridge/tailpiece.
cosmitron Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Thanks for the comments guys! And yeah, Glister, I checked crazy part website. But I might give a go to the tonepros set and do the aging process myself. For the time being here are some daylights pics I just did (cause there's nothing like guitar porn after all): Heritage binding are icing on cake right?!! a question though: How can you tell what pickups are installed? HRW or Schaller?
yuominae Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 From what I've heard about HRWs so far, If it's 24 years old it should be Schallers. Beautiful guitar by the way Congratulations!
cosmitron Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Thanks for the info nachbarn (unless you're in japan right now)!!
tulk1 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Nice blue guitar. If you really want to replace the hardware to match the age, you need to look for a Schaller roller bridge and Schaller tailpiece. That's what came on it originally. And you should be able to find them around, somewhere. Germany, maybe? ....
cosmitron Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 I have one home! But I'd like a matching bridge in age! I'll stick to the nashville or some ABR1 clone
tulk1 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I have one home! But I'd like a matching bridge in age! I'll stick to the nashville or some ABR1 clone I was just messing with you. I prefer the non-roller bridge, myself. Good luck on the hunt. That one is a beauty!
yuominae Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Thanks for the info nachbarn (unless you're in japan right now)!! Yeah, I was only your neighbour for a very short while. I'm in Japan now and staying here for a few years at least. Sorry we didn't get to meet in Berlin
Beagle216 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Thank you guys! Here's another shot: Looks like the previous owner changed the tailpiece for a chrome plated zamak Gibson and a Japanese ABR1. PM me if you want pics. Not sure it is the right one for your guitar though. May want to check.
cosmitron Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 Sup guys! I've been busy upgrading my lill H170 lately. Being on the workbench is probably my favorite relaxing activity. I finally used some Duesenberg hardware and after some deep thoughts I gave the Mojotone pickups a go. The Duesenberg abr-type bridge is interesting cause it's well made, well thought and it's also the right size. It has a radius that helps matching the strings to the fretboard radius, in addition to the saddles placement. The saddles are milled and not cast, and the bridge locking screws are on both sides which makes it way easier to lock/unlock than the Tonepros. I naturally took a matching Aluminium Duesenberg tailpiece, and there's not much to say about it, except I like it much more than the Gibson zamak chrome the previous owner put in there. I have a set of BKP Mules on my H150, and Gibson Burstbuckers on most of my guitars, and wanted to try something new. After some hours of googling I set my mind on the Mojotone pickups. According to Guitar Player magazine: "...if you want to get as close as possible to vintage Gibson humbucker tone, the ’59 PAF Clones are a great way to go." I have no idea what the vintage Gibson humbucker tone actually sounds like, and I read similar things many times. But the specs are there and circumstances too (had to buy more parts from the same supplier ). I took a classic for the neck and a Clone PAF 59 for the bridge. I'm really happy with that move even though I might try a matching set in the future. The Mojotone pups are sharp yet gritty, really responsive to the right hand playing. I'm lacking describing vocabulary but I love them. Here's a short sample: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12788668
