tulk1 Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Honestly, I think I was just tired when I tried them yesterday. I just spent about a half hour with them through the same amp with the same settings. They sound fine this morning. Nice dynamics out of them. They are balanced well and adjusted properly. I might still sell them though. But I'm going to give them more of a chance before I make that decision. Tired ears. Used to get that when mixing for hours on end. Good you retried them this morning. Can't imagine those pickups would be flat. I once sold an absolutely beautiful H157 OSB (NOT!! O5B!!! ) because I didn't like the '59s. The guy that got it said it just sang. Oh well!! I think that is one gorgeous guitar you got there PK. Good to hear it's a keeper. And the faded white rings look really nice on it, too.
FredZepp Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 That seems like a really sweet 150, as you fine tune it to your preference. It reminds me of my first 150, which I still have, everything seems right about that one.
Yooper Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 because I didn't like the '59s A lot of that goes on here, and seeded doubt in my mind. They didn't sound like my '57 RI, but why should they? I'm glad I kept them. They perfectly compliment my P-90s and '57 Classics. Maybe they aren't fit to some tastes, but they really grew on me. They give the a broader range when contrasted with my other Humbucker guitars. And really, it is all about individual taste. Just like there is no "one true PAF" here is no "best". Differences are a good thing. One can go insanely OCD, or broke, on that quest. It's a rainbow of sound out there. Enjoy all the colors.

Kuz Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 IMHO, pickups should ALWAYS be judged in a band setting, how it sits into the mix. It is completely different to just judge a guitar through an amp by itself. What might sound thick , fat, and sweet by itself can be muddy & dead with the band. This is why many (and I subscribe to this thought) won't even plug in an electric guitar when shopping. If it rings & is resonate, then many different pups will work. If it is dead, lifeless, and choked sounding, then no pups will make it a great guitar. It is and will always be..... about the wood!!!
tulk1 Posted July 20, 2014 Posted July 20, 2014 Which wood, John? The body wood. The neck wood. The ..... fret board wood? .............. But, yes. That is correct.

Just wished I'd learned all that a lot sooner.
