kidsmoke
DVM, have you built this new BYOC kit yet? This would be the third iteration of a Klon kit from the BYOC, is that right? Interesting process, chasing the grail. I know I still only use one drive pedal, your Gen1 Klone. Every day. Absolutely love it, especially through the Champlifier which at 5W is easy to set to that "just" breaking up point. The goose of this pedal with PAF's is just what my ears want to hear. No, not correct that it's BYOC's 3rd iteration. The Silver Pony kit just introduced by BYOC is their first Klon clone. Previous "klones" you've seen from me are from other sources. The one you have is built with the MKC1 "Mini-Klon" PCB from GuitarPCB.com. Though based upon the KC circuit, this is NOT a true clone--a number of modifications were made to the circuit, including elimination of the charge pump IC and the option to build it with separate Gain 1 and Gain 2 controls (as I did), rather than using the dual-ganged pot of the original. Still, it remains true to the Klon tone and has been quite a popular seller, as I understand. Glad to hear that you're still digging yours and getting a lot of use from it! The second one, pictured earlier in this thread and sharing the same basic PCB design with Ken Dalton's Mythical Overdrive, used a board that was offered as part of a "group buy" on the BYOC forum. To tell you the truth, I really don't know what the original source of that PCB was, 'cuz I'm pretty sure it was beyond the capabilities of the guy who sold it. But that one's a solid KC clone and sounds very authentic. Now, to answer your first question--yes, I've built the Silver Pony and it sounds just like it's supposed to, to my ear. A/B'ed it with my earlier Klone and the two sound virtually identical--the BYOC pedal may have very slightly more lower mids, but any difference is extremely subtle. big bob
Those all look cool, but I already have an overdrive pedal. http://lab.sekaimon.com/img/fetch/i/160785255532
HANGAR18
I can hear the mid bump too, and frankly one of the biggest reasons for using a Klon is to push a gained up amp into overdrive without changing the sonic signature of the amp, and I think that's where most clones fail. The clipping of the Klon is an added benefit and most clones do that alright. A direct into Garageband demo is not a good way to show the pedal's capabilities. IMNSHO the Electro Harmonix "Soul Food" at $66.99 will get you as close as the BYOC. I bought a Soul Food pre-owned for $50.00 with wall power adapter. Not that I really need it because my amps sound great as they are but just in case I ever want a little variety, I've got it.

I must be getting old. These days there's no way in hell I'd have the patience to do all that soldering. Perhaps if I spread it out over a week (or two). Ten years ago I'd have jumped all over a project like that.
Yooper
I bought a Soul Food Soul Food has now become a favorite flavor of my sound. I picked one up, just because it was there, and I could. I took it straight to a two night festival/party gig. I plugged it in and off we went. This little dude has it all over the dials. Don't try this in public performance. This was primarily a jam weekend for me. I went on faith to a few different settings, and they all worked.
