MartyGrass Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 I wondered how my H530 would look in gold. I have an old gold Heritage tailpiece from a Millennium Eagle 2000 that fits a slimmer guitar and thought that could work on the H530. I asked Lollar's about changing the black plastic cover to gold and replacing the nickel screws. I got a very thoughtful response. Here it is. And no, I'm not switching to gold! Hi Mark, this is Jimmy from Lollar Pickups. I would not suggest swapping for several reasons; for starters, yes, metal covers will attenuate some of the highs and lower the overall output a small amount, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but most people want to maximize clarity and adding metal covers is somewhat counter-productive to that. Secondly, you will likely need to change the baseplate design of the pickup, so as to allow you to solder the metal cover on to ground it out - otherwise it will hum and buzz when you make contact with it (just like when you touch the tip of your guitar cable when it’s plugged into an amp that is turned on. With regard to swapping out the screws, although this is fairly easy, it’s not without risks, namely the pickups are potted as a finished assembly, so removing the screws and installing new ones could potentially cause quite a bit of microphonic and feedback issue. Potting could also be an issue for the metal covers, seeing as we always re-pot P90 pickups from Epiphone Casinos when we rebuild them after soldering the covers back on. If you have a luthier that you trust to do all this, it is your prerogative, but I strong advise that you don’t, for the reasons above and because it may void any warranty that Heritage may offer. I hope this is helpful, please let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Jimmy Davis Customer Service/Sales Manager Lollar Pickups (206)463-9838
tulk1 Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 I've spoken with Jimmy on some custom winds. He was always very insightful. And uh .... good go on the no gold. Just my opine.
skydog52 Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 I had a H-525 that I wanted to change everything to gold because I scored a H tailpiece. I wanted to keep the black dog ears but wanted to change the pole screws. Called Lollar and told them what I'm doing and asked them how much and Jason said nothing give me your address. Good people to deal with.
