jimsoloway Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I'm starting to get serious about starting the next album so I'm doing a bunch of recording experiments to see if I can find some better ways to record this guitar. They'll probably just be short excerpts focused on sound rather than full tunes. If you guys are interested I'll keep posting them as I go. This is the first. It's my intro to Georgia On My Mind and it's a test with a new method of recording the guitar in stereo. [soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/jim-soloway/georgiastereointroonly-09-22-14[/soundcoud]
skydog52 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Very tasteful! I'm enjoying all you clips on soundcloud. Great playing
jimsoloway Posted September 23, 2014 Author Posted September 23, 2014 Thanks. I kind of feel like my recording efforts for the last year have been a wasteland of computer problems, interface problems and wrong mic choices. It's a nice relief to at least be able to get some recordings done without huge levels of noise so I can just focus on playing. And I feel like I;m finally getting some real choices out of this guitar. I just listened to a few clips I've done over the last few days and while the one I posted doesn;t come out as the best of them, they all sound a while lot better than anything I've gotten in a long time.
jimsoloway Posted September 24, 2014 Author Posted September 24, 2014 Thanks Jeff. Here's another one that I just recorded using the Radial JDX Reator, a direct box that goes in between the amp and the cab. It is supposed to blend the signal from the amp with impulses from the cab to capture the full sound of the rig. It doesn't really capture the rig in that what I'm hearing on the recording is very different than what I'm hearing in the room, but coupled with the Ibanez TSA15 mini-stack it did manage to pass my most difficult recording text. I've been recording the same passage over and over with every piece of gear I own and have owned over the last year or so. It is a ridiculously bass heavy passage and getting it recorded without breaking up is a real challenge. There are still some things to tweak here (plus my computer is in the midst of doing a full system virus scan which guarantees a noisy take) but this is really not bad give how demanding the test is.[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/jim-soloway/jdxtest1-09-23-14[/soundcloud]
bolero Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 listening to the first clip, sounds great! did you put one of the mics inside the gtr?
DC Ron Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 gorgeous tone, tasteful (as always) playing.
jimsoloway Posted September 24, 2014 Author Posted September 24, 2014 listening to the first clip, sounds great! did you put one of the mics inside the gtr? At the risk of giving away secrets, there were actually no mic's involved at all. The recording was done using a modeler running direct into the computer by USB. I have the model set up as a stereo image with all of the modeling on one track and a raw unprocessed signal on the other so it's like mixing a mic'd amp with a signal from a direct box.
jimsoloway Posted September 25, 2014 Author Posted September 25, 2014 Thanks. Recording is finally starting to be fun again. I think there should be some new videos and maybe even a couple tracks for the next album ready to go in the next week or so.
