Those Nibs

Hi all, I own a Millennium Ultra which I really enjoy , wished I had placed the order in Heritage without the neck nibs (if it was available at Heritage). Does anyone feel uncomfortable with them and more important has gone through the hassle of refretting just to remove them? Thanks in advance .

PS read somewhere that Gibson is getting rid of them on some or all models.

when I get refrets done, I get the fret end extended right over them

with the thinnest neck binding it doesn't bother me, but when you get to the thicker *blinged out* binding it is annoying IMO. especially if you bend strings

plus you lose fret area

1+ the same here , they did not bother me on my 335 but the bindings on the Millennium are way bigger , I feel the strings to close compared to other guitars I use .

Gibson has decided to go over the binding now on several "higher" priced models. Even though its cheaper to go over binding.

actually it is more work to trim the fret end, so it doesn't protrude through the side of the binding

however if they are just fretting right through the binding as if it wasn't there, that would be cheaper. I doubt they are doing that though?

I specify frets over the binding, on a new build, like a refret and they do a great job of it.
For reference see my Spruce Millie and H170 in the gallery.

you will not regret refretting it. I wish I discovered how much a difference this makes before I sold off a few heritage guitars. It made a huge difference for me and I have two heritage guitars that have Frets over the binding (one being a Millie) ....

Thanks to all for the info and Rhoads thanks for your input , it's time to refrett and enjoy more an already great instrument . Have to add that this is good info to consider for someone that is in the process of a new order to Heritage.

Nibs never bothered me. I have with and without nibs on different guitars. Just never noticed a difference. Just my opinion, others may vary, but I wouldn't refret a guitar just to get rid of the nibs if the frets had plenty of life on them.

I am with you Kuz, I hold the neck extremely light to begin with, and never pay it any mind one way or the other.

Guess I'm the third like minded post in a row. Nibs just never mattered.

Even so, I do remember a fella that hung around here for a time looking for his first Heritage. When he got one he was disappointed because the binding nibs weren't perfect enough. I can't remember all the details, but he sold the guitar because of it and stopped visiting.

It's ok he was a nibcompoop anyway.

Nib dude..only nibbing I mean kidding if you're reading.

I never noticed nibs either other than a Martin I have with a refret without nibs. How do they effect play? They lessen the length of the usable fret?

I seem to remmeber reading on the Gibson web site a long time ago that the nibs were supposed to make the neck feel more comfortable to play. Personally, I don't think they are very comfortable at all. I'm fine without them.

Were they supposed to protect people's fingers from Gibson's sharp frets ;)

The only time I'd see nibs becoming a problem is for people who play A LOT and would wear out the frets in between the nibs?

Never going to happen to me thankfully (sadly actually...).

How does a nib removal (a nib and tuck?) affect guitar resale value by the way?

what are nibs?

They are the fret edges the protrude beyond the fretboard, such the when you slide your hand up and down the neck, you can feel the nibs as you do. This bothers some players, a friend of mine bought a Heritage from Daves Guitars in LaCrosse, WI., and he complained about the nibs. Don't know what he did ultimately with the guitar.

My H535 has had a nibectomy. Or maybe it's a nibotomy.

Came to me that way when I bought it on fleaBay a few years ago.

Someone went to some trouble to remove binding material around the fret ends. (No, it has never had a refret.)

Works/feels/plays just fine.

I just looked at my H157 and I think it has half size nibs. I'll need glasses to get a better look but the neck is very comfortable. Didn't even realize they were there.

I love nibs! My favorite guitars of all times have nibs. If it looks like a refret...I pass

Adding absolutley nothing to the discussion...however that has never stopped me.

When I was specing out my 150 last year Marv asked if I wanted 0.80" or 0.060" binding on the neck.

I asked "What do think the difference is?"(sic)

He said "0.020"

I sheepishly said "I'll go with the 0.060" :blush_mini:

I believe the PLEK machine will take care of the fret ends.
