Tim Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 So I'm walking the dog last week on trash night. I notice someone had put out a small amp. I walked over and took a look (thinking it was a little solid state piece of crap). It was a Kalamazoo Model 1 tube amp in remarkably mint condition. So, I grabbed it and replaced the tubes (one was shot). It powers up, but with a serious hum. Not sure what to replace next, transformer, caps...any thoughts? Would love to get this thing working as research has indicated it actually has tasty tone potential.
davesultra Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 I would look at the filter caps next. How come I never find any cool stuff on trash night?
Gitfiddler Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 There was an old harmonica player seen driving around your neighborhood looking for his old amp. Just kidding! Those old Kalamazoo amps can get cool tones. Good luck with it.
barrymclark Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Now THAT is cool! They are definitely a hit with the harmonica players.
Genericmusic Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 IT definitely would be a hit for me. I've been looking for one to go with my KG-2. Nice find.
DetroitBlues Posted October 6, 2014 Posted October 6, 2014 Filter caps are the first thing I'd have checked besided the other tubes.
slider313 Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 New power supply filters and a new bias cap are a must. That should cure the hum. I would double check all the grounds and make sure to install a three prong power cord.
Tim Posted October 9, 2014 Author Posted October 9, 2014 Thanks everyone! It's all on my list (including learning the harmonica:)
samwheat Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 does it have a 3 wire power cord? that is the first thing I would do b4 I even plugged it in
