Kazwell Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 My guitar may be new, but it only really "shines" when it sounds old and dirty!! Ironic isn't it? Recording notes: I played along to a pre-recorded backup track of Stormy Monday Blues ala Allman Bros Fillmore version in Cakewalk Sonar. I don't profess to be a Duane Allman or Dickey Betts, and what I really wanted to do was show off the SOUND of the Seth Lover (neck position) rather than my playing. I really like that unpotted harmonic "squeek" these things make which I may have overdonw a little just to underline this fact. I'm going through a VOX Tone Lab direct to the soundcard with a AC30 amp emulation configured with a Virtual fender 2X12 cabinet. Used a very conservative amount of gain in order to push the natural distortion of the pickup. Athough I added some "room reverb" from the Tonelab, I purposely did not add any additional proceesing on the track in Cakewalk. I normally usually have to add something to pull some tone from the track, but this recording didn't need it, which is a real tribute to the clarity and tone of these pickups. Also, I was using 11-52 gauge strings with a COOL .75mm pick-love those COOL picks!!! Enjoy! http://www.americanvocalist.com/H150SLN.mp3
Dick Seacup Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 The only thing that detracts from that track is the amount of reverb on the guitar, which I thought was a little high (but I can't play for beans and have a tin ear, so who am I to judge?). Other than that, though, I liked it. I've never heard of COOL picks, what's that all about then? Lastly, which version of Sonar? I stopped at 5PE, as I planned on doing the usual "preorder the next one, get the current one free" with 7/6PE, but they didn't offer it this year. Not that I needed anything in any version past Sonar2, but hey. I thought the playing was fine, by the way!
Kazwell Posted November 10, 2007 Author Posted November 10, 2007 Yeah,I admit I tend to overdo the reverb, tends to create a very relaxing vibe to me when I jam late at night-did this about 3:00am. Using Sonar 7 which I had to upgrade to in oder to implement EZ Drummer which my earlier version of Sonar 4 was incompatible with. The biggest thing I have seen in the newer versions of CW is the addition of some realling cool mastering plug ins. Although nothing replaces having the mastering done professionally with high end hardware. I just happen to like the feel of there "medium". Don't know if the gauge is different from the Fender mediums I have used most my life, but there is a flexibility that feels realy good to me. Although they are not the only manufacturers that do this, they also have a nice feeling "grip" etched into the nylon that helps me position the pick a little more accurately. Thanks for the props.
jacques Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 I agree with Dick, the sound could be a bit drier to my ears too. Nothing wrong with your fingers and choice of licks, dude, so give us some more (less treated) Seth Lover H150, please!
golferwave Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 3:00 A.M. ? That's shortly before I get up to go to work. Can't wait until I retire so I can join the rest of you for the wee hours jam sessions!
Kazwell Posted November 11, 2007 Author Posted November 11, 2007 I need to add, and I am not kidding-I work the 5am to 1:30pm shift at work M-F. That means I was pushing being up for close to 24 hours straight last night/yesterday morning. And to add to it my twin girls-7 next month, get up at 7:30am EVERY morning-weekends included. Needless to say with the late night jamming on Fri and Sat nights is all the time I have to really relax and devote some time to myself. Its a high price to pay (can you say sleep deprivation?) But is it worth it for the love of music? Well, I think most everybody here knows the answer to that question.

You post during the daytime and every American thinks you play all nite long. It's easy.
Thundersteel Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 That sounded really good! (Flicks his lighter) I need to get me some Seth Lovers for my 150!
rooster Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 I had Seths in my 150 for awhile. They are a fantastic pickup as far as "traditional" sounding pickups go. I liked them quite a bit. The only reason I don't use them now is I went to Bill Lawrence PU's (Bill and Becky, not "Bill Lawrence USA"). rooster.
dblazer Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I like the Seymour/Seth's better than any other humbuckers I've had, the two Heritage guitars I sold both had the Schallers in them, they're nice, well mannered and totally BORING to my ear. My H-140 with the Seth's is the keeper. That and the H-137 with the Lollar P-90s, which is another version of the same story.
DrFrankStein Posted November 18, 2007 Posted November 18, 2007 SWEEEEEEET!!!!! Dang man, that sounds great. Very smooth licks. I don't mind the reverb at all, it gives you a "back of the club" kind of feeling. Thanks for sharing.
Kazwell Posted November 28, 2007 Author Posted November 28, 2007 Thanks DrFrankStein Karma up!!! Nice to see folks write something positive-sign of somebody who most likely has the skills -therefore doesn't let their ego get in the way of compliments. Afraid too many folks in this forum are more into watchin their guitars hanging on the wall of their basements collecting dust than actually playing them. I heard from another member here I won't name that usually the biggest talkers have the least skills-which is the way it is anywhere actually. But you gotta respect some people who spend thousands of dollars on a guitar plus a ton of time modifying it (them) just so they can pick it up an strum it for 5 minutes every six months and the rest of the time talking about it!!! But that's cool, they give out some valuable information once in a while, so it's being part of this community-I guess
golferwave Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 I think it sounds great also! I've listened to it almost daily since you posted it and I've started to play some of those licks and turning the reverb up and down as I play. I'm a reverb kind of guy so I like the tone with it turned up a bit. I just got some of the COOL picks a couple of weeks ago and I love em. They really stick to your finger and thumb without sliding around. One less thing to worry about.

I swear my new H-150 w the Seth Lovers inspires me-even after thirty years of playing. That says a lot. I never cared much for Duncans-but these PU's are exceptional. On a side note, the link I posted is no longer working thanks to the worthless hosting at ipower.com-who have recently gone to 24/7 support at the cost of actual service. The poor girl on the other end of the phone could barely speak english and didn't understand (obviously) my request. Thought I wanted the site taken down. Uuuuuuhhhg!!!!! Now it's another 1 hour wait to try to straighten this out. This outsourcing thing at the cost of service has GOT to stop!!!! Wish Bill Gates (who is totally on board with outsourcing could have been on that call!!!) Oh well, such is life in the cyberworld- take care
jamison162 Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 I liked the Seth's a lot. They were just a tad bright and a tad thin sounding to me so I'm exchanging them for the Alnico II Pro's which are basically potted Seth's and sound a little warmer/fuller. We shall see, I'll give a report. But..tonight at rehearsal, I will be playing my H-150 and trying out this WCR Darkburst bridge that I put in last night. This should be REALLY good, no? http://www.wcrguitar.com/darkburst_clips.html

Interesting sound on the cliip-great player on there-wish SD had some more extensive clips than just that same short riff they play on their website which never gives me a true reading of the sound. Of course there was a lot of distortion in the guitar setting for the Darkburst samples, but with the sound was outstanding. Are you a more "distortion" player? If so, then the Darkburst may be just right for you. I notice the neck pu of the Seth Lover set is brighter than most humbuckers I have played that we considered voiced for the neck position. However, unless I am playing smokey jazz, which I rarely if ever do anymore, the neck pickups I have used in the past have been pretty useless. These, I tend to use much more which is a big plus. The biggest issue I have had so far is the sqeal which I was warned about. I don't play out live anymore so it is not a big issue. But if an impromptu jam session comes my way, I may be more inclined to grab a different guitar depending if things were going to get loud. Very interested to hear how the session goes tonight with those new pickups. Have fun!!
