ironmike Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 back when i was a kid, i was learning a bit from billy bauer, howie collins and jimmy raney, howie alway used those black labellas on his 7 string, i remember having a set too, but that was fourty years ago, anyone ever here them on a heritage? what do you think, the days are short and the nights are long, i've got plenty of time to wood shed this winter, might put'm on a maple 575...old bulls are hard to stop once they get rolling!.
MartyGrass Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I have not used them but have considered them a few times. The reviews are mostly negative with some real enthusiasts. I never got to the point where I'd be willing to open the nut slots to try them.
ironmike Posted November 24, 2014 Author Posted November 24, 2014 good point, perhaps when i recut a nut,i'll set one up and revisit it.
Dennpark Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I bought an Eagle classic with black Labella strings on it and did not care for them. Flat and dull sounding. I replaced with a set of T. I. jazz flat wound 13`s and am very satisfied with the tone and playability.
ironmike Posted November 24, 2014 Author Posted November 24, 2014 i was just listening to john pizzarelli use them,i ordered a set if 12's and a set of 14's...,i see how he makes use of them,a wonderfull tool, just not versatile, i have enough guitars to set one up like that. a quiet mellow sound for a solo lap piano!
peterbright Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 have used tape wounds on basses before but went back to flat wounds
ironmike Posted November 24, 2014 Author Posted November 24, 2014 i used them on a carvin fretless electric and i like em alot. we'll see, the strings should be here in a week or so.
