MartyGrass Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 New parts! This package came from Hinesarchtop. He has been an excellent communicator on this project and a lot of fun, too. Notice how well it was packed.
MartyGrass Posted December 8, 2014 Author Posted December 8, 2014 I'm having a little difficulty with this weird PC, so bear with me. Here's the new harness for the Toty Viola H530. You can see the guitar in my signature block. It needed better pots. Here are the new ebony PGs, one for my Super Johnny Smith and one for my Sweet 16. The JS has a Kent Armstrong single coil that switches between two resistances. Note the switch. There is also a treble bleed, something Kent recommended. The Sweet 16 has a Benedetto pup, which is a bit hotter and fuller than the Heritage Floating #3. I don't know what type of ebony this is, but it looks like Macassar, renowned for it's beauty as well as hardness. The binding on the Sweet 16 was darkened to match the rest of the binding on this 1989 guitar. There are a bunch of smaller parts. They are primarily bridges with both metal (Nashville) and wood saddles for the H530, Sweet 16 and JS. I'm thrilled with the work. Now I have to put everything together. I've dealt with quite a few luthiers over the years. I've never had as great of service, particularly in view of the complexity of the job, as I got with hinesarchtop. Thank you very, very much, Gary.
Redsand Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Thanks for the post, always great to see the "parts" someone else decides to change out! I'm slowly building a plan to acquire myself a "Big Boy" guitar next year.
MartyGrass Posted December 8, 2014 Author Posted December 8, 2014 If you are going to have Heritage build an archtop for you, I wouldn't be hesitant to use a Floating #3. It has a very nice airy, articulate sound, almost like a microphone. But if you have any connections at Heritage, and I think you do, consider getting a second PG with a hotter pup. You also would do well to get an archtop with a routed pup or two. I'd recommend either Fralin P92s or a PAF type, maybe an SD 59 or Seth Lover. Don't break the bank buying pups. There's no need to spend more. The Schallers in my SE can make drop dead beautiful sounds matching Wes and Kenny. The last piece of advice is get something you will play, not look at. Figure out the design of a guitar that seems to disappear when you play it, just fades into the background. Not heavy or bulky or with uncomfortable edges.
yoslate Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 The last piece of advice is get something you will play, not look at. Amen! Can I get a witness!?
Vanschoyck Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Amen! Can I get a witness!? Sing it my brother!
thorn Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 The last piece of advice is get something you will play, not look at. Wait. Do what now?
2bornot2bop Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Okay, I clicked on the other identical thread and wondered where your pics went! Okay, I've not totally lost it after all...that's a relief! Loving those pick guards. Can't wait to see them connected...get busy Mark!
2bornot2bop Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Oh, and does the JS pick guard have a high gloss coating over the Ebony? My eyes are seeing a gloss finish reflection on the bottom edge of the pick guard photos. Thanks Mark!
Gitfiddler Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Stunning parts. Did Hinesarchtop make those beautiful pickguards? And yes, the back looks like Macassar Ebony based on the reddish brown streaking. Love it!
