musicianandteacher Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Hi all, About to buy this Heritage (2004) Gold Top and was wondering if you knew the exact specs, tips, info or anything else about it. It has the original Schaller pickups, but does not seem to have the usual roller tailpiece etc - were they already changed to standard Gibson type fitments by that date? Owner has owned the guitar since 2007, when he imported it from the US to the UK. Overall looks in good condition, other than a few dings, and has the scratchplate with it and the case too. Any thoughts, input or ideas welcomed (I am a PRS player mainly but have TOO many guitars already - but could not resist this bargain in the UK). Brian.
AP515 Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Hi Brian, Nice 140. Seems you already know a lot about it. If you remove the cover plate you may see some new information.
yuominae Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Af far as I know the switchover to Nashwille type hardware happened around 2001, so the bridge and tailpiece shouldn't be abnormal. I would have thought that the Schaller pickups were gone by that time too... As said above, try to get the seller to send you a shot of the label inside the control cavity. Hopefully there will be more info in there. Maybe the pickups are HRWs...
musicianandteacher Posted January 3, 2015 Author Posted January 3, 2015 Hi guys. Thanks for the replies. Got the guitar now - it's very nice but needs a bit of electrical work - switch wire soldered and a new neck pickup volume pot as it's dead. Opened the electrical cavity at the sellers house - all untouched, and stated H140, serial number and Gold Top - nothing else. Emailed Heritage and they think it would have Schallers, and also a roller bridge, but said it was totally possible it had Nashville hardware as many people requested that on order. The hardware is all equally aged so very likely. Will be popping the pickups and sorting the wiring tonight, so will let you know how it goes. Brian.
musicianandteacher Posted January 3, 2015 Author Posted January 3, 2015 Hi all. Stripped it down tonight, fixed the wiring fault (the switch cavity is VERY large for the switch... odd they would rout it like this) and put it back together. Anyway now all cleaned up, has the Schaller Nashville bridge/stop tail set fitted at factory instead of roller, has the Schaller gold German neck and bridge humbuckers (which sound great) and has been set up now with 11's. Overall it sounds and plays well - needs some serious playing as it's a bit like a NOS off the shelf guitar and is a bit stiff. Will add a few pictures 😄👍
yuominae Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Wow, NOS condition H140 first generation, that's really cool since they don't make that model anymore. Great buy! Congratulations
TalismanRich Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Nice looking 140. I have an 87 and really like it. FYI, I posted a link to the 2005 catalog in the other H140 thread. It has a photo of the goldtop in it.
musicianandteacher Posted January 6, 2015 Author Posted January 6, 2015 Brilliant - thanks - I'll have a look The guitar now has a rehearsal and a gig under it's belt - it a VERY loud guitar acoustically, even against some other very nice guitars. Brian
