hopkinwfg Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 hi guys am new here on this board... well have came across a H150 which has gotten a very wild tight flame top but unlike most of the Heritages offers their top not as stunning as this... i was wonder do i have to go custom upon stating the type of top i like and to getta headstock binded ? never have played a gibson custom before but i did had a hands on on a heritage 150 and i kinda like the tone as it sounded good..wonder if a Heritage 157 would sound better and feel better than a custom gibson ?
mars_hall Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Heritage does the 157 which has the added binding and the limited edition deluxe offerings which also tend to have the extra bindings. You can order binding as you wish. Ask your dealer. As far as upgraded tops, I believe they refer to the up-level ones as ultra tops when ordering and not require a full custom. Hope I have answered the questions you asked.
rstein Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Just send a photo of what your looking for to your dealer and they should be able to let you know if Heritage can do that. The higher end tops are called ultra. Heritage is good people I ordered a H 157 last summer and picked out my top since I live in Kalamazoo and they started building it but when they got to a certain point in the build they found I thinks its called wood mineral in the top so Heritage decided the top wasn't good enough and started my order over. They still used top but not on mine build. Oh Gibson custom MSRP $6000 Heritage custom MSRP $3420 roughly. H157>Gibson in my opinion

hopkinwfg Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 cause i bumped into this heritage from TGP and i was like wow... and my thoughts on getting a heritage grow again.... look at that nice flame maple top and the sweet lemon or honey color over it... i would want to get a quote from somewhere in America that specialised in heritages... any good intro?

rstein Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 thanks... but how about tone ? does heritage have that LP tone in it with what the people are looking for a gibson that can be found on a heritage ? Where do you think the Les Paul got its tone? Kalamazoo where the the original Les Paul was built. Heritage still uses the same equipment. BTW that Heritage is F ING SICK!! what pickups are it in? Oh and they are Heavier than a Gibson.

Oh and they are Heavier than a Gibson. hahah thanks for chiming in sorry due to my ignorance but i am never a LP guy... i been playing super strats for all my guitar playing life... my first guitar was an ibanez rg470... thought i wanted amercian made guitars badly so i got a jackson soloist... but after seeing many people talking about Gibson and Heritages that makes me seriously think hard enough about getting an LP ... feel and tone with the right price = purchase... i know they are equipped with grover tuners and duncan pickups... i tried once the H150 and i admit it the tone is great! but was still unsure of if i really wanted it untill i saw this sick picture which i posted a nice looking heritage with a sick flame maple top ! the moment i realise you need to spend like 6k or 5k on a Gibson for that kinda build and plus the inconsistency which gibby now being rumoured by players out there... seems like Heritage is the way of the LP huh?

The 6k is for a Gibson custom that is pre made here is a example http://www.zzounds.com/item--GIBLPCThe 6k is MSRP but sells for around $4100 and the H 157 Heritage MSRP around $3400 and sell for less than $3000 depending on the specs you choose. The guitar in your photo is a H 150 and brand new they start around $2990 MSRP. Having said that I do believe Heritage is upping there guitar prices but not by much and the prices I posted are from the Heritage brochure you can get at the factory. Typically your Heritage dealer can get you about a 30% discount off the MSRP give or take. Hope this helps. If you have any question send me inbox message.

Is it my 150 VSB you saw by any chance? I had it listed on TGP until a couple of days ago. This one: This is most definitely a better than standard top, but you see some like this every so often and I've seen a few with even nicer tops. Tonewise, this guitar is (was since it's sold pending payment now), easily as sweet as a Les Paul. I mean, each of my LPs, 150s and 157s sound different, but they all sound like what you imagine this type of guitar should sound like. Pickups and skill are responsible for the rest. I think the most important thing is that you get one that looks and feels the way you want it. With Gibson it'll be hard to specify stuff I imagine, but with Heritage you could get a guitar that is EXACTLY the way you want it. That's pretty awesome

Lol, I bought that guitar used when I was in Berlin earlier this year. I paid 1400Euros for it, which was waaaaaaay too much. I reckon if you could find one like that used in the US it would be around the $1500 mark if it still had the original pickups and a lot less dings than mine had. This one came with HRW pickups originally (but they were gone when I got it) and with that top, I think it is a "special" H150, not your run of the mill one. Har d to tell though, because there wasn't anything special written on the label. But it is the best looking and best playing H150 of the 10 or so I have owned so far. I just have a lot of guitars though, so I let that one go... Good luck finding one that you like
Dick Seacup Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I seem to recall someone at the factory saying that tight, perpendicular ribboning was characteristic of Western Maple, whereas the more curly, broader flame is from Big Leaf and/or Eastern Maple. If you're going to custom order, and want that tight ribbon it might be worthwhile to ask your dealer to verify that is the top used. But I could be way off base.
bolero Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I had a really nice R7 black beauty my H157 blows it out of the water just my experience

Opening the case of a Heritage is like getting a glimpse into the heart and soul of each of the craftsmen/women who touched it during the build. With Gibson, on the other hand, you're getting a bit of HJ's Harvard MBA tainted-soul. So, it's more like opening the Dibbuk Box.
bolero Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 so the heritage crushes the gibby ? well, I like it much better
FredZepp Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Beautiful top on that 150 and it does look like a western maple, which produce that tight pinstripe flame more often and seems to be the preference for "ultra" tops at Heritage. Some like the wider more irregular ribbon flame and mineral streaks of eastern maple, but I like ( and own) both. That one also has a distinct pronounced perpendicular grain... recently these have been called a BBQ top because of the pattern the two make together. That one is stunningly nice...
JeffB Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 youminae, that top is beautiful. What a great looking Heritage!!
yuominae Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Thanks guys Unfortunately it will soon not be mine anymore. As soon as I gets the $$$ for it... If the current deal falls through it will be going to RhoadsScholar

FredZepp Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 There are big variances in wood.. so there are exceptions. But these have the straight flame and grain that we'd expect from western maple I'd guess that these are eastern maple... with more irregular patterns But ironically, most modern quilted maple is western maple.
