PunkKitty Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 This happened while the forum was on hiatus. I posted it in another forum so some of you have seen it. I got this 535 by trading in seven cheap guitars. No cash was exchanged. It's a 2000 with Seths. It needed a good polishing. The tone pots were scratchy so I built a new harness and installed it. While I was at it, I installed Throbak alnico 4 magnets in the Seths. This is my new #1 guitar. I love this thing. I also aged the bright chrome Schaller tuners with muriatic acid to match the other worn chrome/nickel hardware. I think my Heritage collection is now complete. Here is the ebay picture of it.
kidsmoke Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 I think my Heritage collection is now complete. can't wait to get my mitts on it and hear those p'ups. did you report on the neck?
PunkKitty Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 can't wait to get my mitts on it and hear those p'ups. did you report on the neck? The neck is a medium carve similar to yours. I'd like to hear your 535 and mine side by side. Maybe I'll stop by one day and we can compare them. About the only thing that would sway me from my "collection is complete" statement would be if the 170LW GT became available again. But outside of that, I'm done.
shook494 Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 That sounds like you got a great deal. I would trade 7 cheap ones for that in a heart beat!
DetroitBlues Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Hmm, I'd love to judge your neck carve statement myself... Maybe if a Chicago muster ever happens... Anyway, how exactly do you "age" chrome?
fxdx99 Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Love those natural finish semis - congrats on that fine instrument, Monica! I've been on a 'loving the semi' kick the last few weeks. Such nice harmonic character.
golferwave Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 That's an absolute killer axe! A4 magnets have the groove - Enjoy!
PaGator Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 PK congrats, sounds like a great deal, thin the herd and get an awesome axe in return
FredZepp Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 That's an excellent grab... and how cool to trade in to get it. That is a great way to get it done.
Yooper Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 I wonder is it true A4s are closer in sound to A2s than to A5s?
DOGBOY Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 7 case queens for your new #1, great stuff. BTW love the Josh(DB) "collection is complete" statement, humorous!!
PunkKitty Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 Hmm, I'd love to judge your neck carve statement myself... Maybe if a Chicago muster ever happens... Anyway, how exactly do you "age" chrome? Poor a bit of muriatic acid in a large plastic container with a tight fitting lid. A margarine container works well. You don't need much acid. Put the parts to be aged in a smaller container without a lid. Put the smaller container in the larger container so the fumes from the acid can work on the chrome. Put the cover on the large container and leave it alone for 18-24 hours until you reach the desired aging. When done, remove the smaller container and wash the pieces that you aged in a combination of water and baking soda. Then pat dry the parts with a paper towel. Let them sit on a clean paper towel for additional drying time. For tuners, don't wash the parts when you are done. Just wipe them down with a wet paper towel and let them air dry for a day or so. Do all work with the acid outside. It's nasty stuff. You can age nickel that way too. But only let nickel parts sit in the fumes for about 2 hours. Nickel is much softer than chrome.
yuominae Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Just to say that I've heard many people say not to pour the acid down the drain afterwards or at least leave the tap on for a long time if you do so your pipes don't dissolve. For nickel I'd use vinegar fumes. Takes longer, but it's completely safe. Acid might give better results though?
bsck1 Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 I'm in such awe of you folks who are capable of restoring these beauties to their deserved state of grace. Well done PK.
rockabilly69 Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Looks great. I have to ask, is there any ill effect on the grease in the tuners from the aging?
PunkKitty Posted January 10, 2015 Author Posted January 10, 2015 Looks great. I have to ask, is there any ill effect on the grease in the tuners from the aging? To be safe, i use a bit of gun lubricant on them after the aging process.

Hfan Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Looks great. I have to ask, is there any ill effect on the grease in the tuners from the aging? As it has been exposed to acid it may experience flash backs, see trails and act oddly on occasion.
