New to the H575, some questions

Hello Heritage owners,

I've bought a 1990 H575 2-pu model yesterday and some questions came to my mind.

The guitar is equipped with the original Schallers I think. Just from the pics I would say the polepieces of the bridge pu sit very closed to the bridge. Anyone tried to turn the pu to get a different sound?

I play clean Jazzblues and can only imagine this would make the bridge and middle postion more useful.

When it's strict for a clean tone, any suggestions for a pickup swap which is really an upgrade to the Schallers? I know this is a question of personal taste, but there are so many on the market, can't buy them all.

I usually play 013 flats, my amps are Fender Excelsiors, Gibson Lab 5 and Lab 9, I'm a fan of 15" speakers.

Also I'm mostly a single coil player and not that familiar with the world of PAF's. The only PAF ever kicked me for clean playing was a very early DiMarzio.

At least, the H of the tailpiece is missing, not a big deal, but would like to complete the original condition. If anyone has a silver spare part, please get in touch, thanks.

Last years I've been playing the jazzy stuff on pretty cheap guitars like a DeArmond/Guild X-135 (nice guitar, great pickup, but the playability isn't too good for some faster licks) and an Epi Joe Pass (just a cheap guitar), so I think I will be very happy anyway.

All the best to the community

Walker

welcome walkerG! your new guitar is a beauty!

though i am not among them, there are many 575 owners on this forum.

it won't be long before you have some very knowledgeable answers to your questions.

My suggestion would be to give the Schallers some time and adjustments before swapping. SUPER underrated pickups. None of my current guitars have them... but then they also didn't come with them. Had the Schallers been in there, I would have left them. Very nice sounding I think.

Welcome. Great guitar. I have the schallers in a semi hollow and I like them for clean clear jazz tone. The pole pieces on mine are oriented like yours. If you experiment in rotating the bridge one, please report back. Happy new guitar day.

I guess I'm going to join the chorus and suggest that you get as close to the tone you're looking for with the guitar as is; in other words, give it a little time not just to evaluate it, but to adapt to it some. There are lots of great pickup choices out there. It's a great looking guitar to be sure. HNGD!

I agree with this. Maybe you'll find a voice in this guitar that suits your style by just spending some time with it and getting to know the instrument.

I'm a serial modder myself, but I generally know what I want from an instrument and how to go about getting it.

WalkerG~ Welcome to the HOC. Nice H575 you have there!!

I also recommend giving the Schallers a chance. My first 575 had them and sounded great, but in my lust for that HRW mystique, I pulled them. The HRW's sound great too, but the Schallers had a sweet jazz tone of their own, and worked well in the guitar. I have no regrets trying the HRW's, (especially since they are basically modded Schallers), but the tone I was seeking was pretty close with the pickups that came with the 575. I still have those Schallers in a box, but they might make it in another of my guitars down the road.

Once you've past the honeymoon period of your new 575, and you still want to try something else, there are tons of great sounding PAF's out there to try. (e.g. Seth Lovers, 57 Classics, Lollar Imperials, Bartolini, etc.).

Bottom line, go with your ears, enjoy your gorgeous new jazz box, and swap p'ups only if you want something that might float your boat.

I put Duncan p-rails in my 575 (sniff I miss you baby) they are great pups for this application, they nail both the p90 and the rail coil tone to a tee.

Thanks for all your answers.

Of course I will give the Schallers a chance. With the guitar (actually fitted with a TOM) comes also the original wooden bridge, so there is another field to explore apart from different string sets and amps.

Looking forward to lay my hands on her, thanks for your suggestions.

I love wood bridges!

i have the same guitar, different color is all..i use those pickups, a bit lower than most, that way your string vibtrates the larger outer magnetic fields and therefore will have a wider frequency response, go for tone , not volume,,electrical efficiency is not your friend..loose the volume ,put the pickup low, and you'll here the strings. get to close and the magnets play the guitar.. i used a tuno- matic for a bit, but went back with the rosewood bridge,,it's the best.(heavy strings rule here)

I agree on the wood bridge. My single PU 575 had a metal bridge and I swapped it for a wood bridge. My other 575 is a two PU unit with Seth Lovers. A good option that a lot of people like. But, like others have said, don't be in a big hurry to swap.

I also agree to the rosewood bridge. I own too many other guitars, so the 575 will be strictly only for some jazzy tunes I play. In this case I clearly prefer a wood bridge.

As I wrote in the beginning, on Jazz boxes I usually use 013 flats, these should do the trick I guess. I also agree to lowering the pu's, that's what I do with most guitars. I'm a recording guy, so tone is always what I'm looking for, volume doesn't matter. In general for volume I use amps not pu's.

Will be fun to see how the guitar reacts with my amps, cause they have very different tonal characteristics. Can imagine the Lab 9 will be a good match for the darker side of playing, the Lab 5 for more airy tunes.

What's a real pain, I have to wait a couple of days for the guitar to arrive. :icon_salut:

After all the guitar arrived yesterday. Looks gorgeous, pretty lightweight, good slim neck profile meets my taste. Downside is, the pre-owner configured the 575 as a rock guitar. Set of 010 roundwounds, TOM bridge, PU's very closed to the strings. A very sportive action, around 1mm at the 12th fret causes a lot of fret buzz. Even like this the guitar sounds real good. But I have too many great rock and blues guitars, so the next days I will bring it back to more jazzy tastes.

Regards your comment about the tailpiece not being complete, your tailpiece is the same as on my 1989 example, serial F32205,so would

be correct original condition.

Mine however has black plastic as opposed to metal pickup covers.

Thanks for the information, thought the guitars always had the big H at the tailpiece.
