A really beautiful sound from my Heritage

I've been doing some recording experiments this afternoon with my long scale/thin bodied H575 and came up with what I think is a really beautiful sound. It's just 30 seconds long and the level is very low so you may have to crank the volume a bit but my first impression is that this is probably the sweetest recorded sound I've ever gotten from an archtop. Things never sound the same the next day, but right now I'm really pleased with this.

Thanks all. The snippet is an excerpt (and for me the intro) to a piece called "The Colours Of Mercy" (which make the comments form heritagefan7 most perceptive). It was written by Tord Gustavsen, a wonderful Norwegian jazz pianist. I transcribed it a few years ago and over the last few months I tried to morph it into something that was a bit more personal for me. I keep saying that I'm about to start on a new album and I think I may finally be getting close. If so, Mercy will most certainly be on it and at the very least I'm hoping to do a new video with this in the next couple weeks.

And I must add, that I truly love this guitar. This is the second of the two long scale H757's that they built me and it gets almost all of my playing time. With the thinner body, it's much more comfortable and the spruce mahogany body, the voice is incredibly sweet. I think it fits the way I play really well.

How are you making the recording? Are you going direct to Garage Band or ProTools, or are you miking an amp?

Hi all. Nice to see this one come back to life.

There's no amp used in this (or any of my recent recordings). I'm plugged into a TC Electronics Arena pedal (essentially an OEM mutation of their Hall Of Fame Reverb). The pedal has a stereo out, and those are going directly to the two channels of a Roland Duo Capture EX interface/pre-amp. That's going straight into a PC running Reaper (That recently replaced GarageBand for me). That's the whole thing. I;m pretty sure I did no additional processing in Reaper so what you're hearing is what went in from the guitar. It's just a remarkably good sounding instrument. Good playing too.

BTW, I was going to come by today just to do an update on this guitar. I've had it now for about 6 months. I really only have two guitars these days and the other one is used almost exclusively to give lessons, so this guitar get's almost 100% of my playing time. I can't say enough good things about this guitar. The appearance is so simple that I don't think most people would be impressed to see it but It's a joy to play and I feel like it really brings out the best in me. I've owned a ridiculous number of guitars over the years and always sold them in a moment of boredom. I can't imagine ever happening with this guitar. I think it's probably with me for the duration.

Jim, it sounds like you've finally found your guitar soul mate. Have the posture or other ergo issues been resolved?

Your playing is always so relaxed and sounds so beautiful.

Thanks. The posture/ergonomic issue is completely solved. That's my other great discovery: the Dynarette Cushion. I use it every time I play (and depending on the height of the chair I sometimes combine it with a classical foot rest). It's completely changed my physical relationship with the instrument.

sounds beautiful Jim, almost has some nylon string quality to the notes.... So cool you found a guitar that suits you so well. I know it took me many, many years to find mine.

Just listened closely to the clip. I'd say this bite makes a great argument for tone being in the hands of the player! I've always thought that about your playing, Jim. Beautiful touch! Great hands!

Thanks guys. Interesting that this particular clip just doesn't seem to go away. That's really encouraging to me because the song this is from is intended to be the centerpiece of my next album and I'm really pretty excited about it.

For tbpnesullivan, that's a DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAF. That's been my standard pickup in all of my humbucker guitars for several years now. I shipped one to Heritage along with several other parts that wanted used when they built this guitar for me.

And for those of you who have said that it's about the hands of the player, I'm sure there's some truth to that (a lot of truth actually) but this really is a great sounding guitar and I find it really inspiring to play.

I have a 36th anniversary in one of my super strats, and it REALLY seems to be a nice pickup. I have been on the fence about changing out the schaller golden 50's in my 535 for a while, and the 36th anniversary was what was thinking of going with in the neck and bridge. Not sure if anyone has really done a comparison of the two.
