H157 - G string buzzing out

Hi,

I recently pulled my H157 out of its case after 1-1.5 yrs and it has changed considerably since I last pulled it out.

I wenrt about getting all the kinks out of the set up. I straightened the neck and set the action about 5-6/64th at the 17th fret.

But now the G string is buzzing out around 3rd/4th fret. When I put a bit of relief in the neck it stops the buzzing but the action is a little too high.

I was wondering if the nut may have sank a little bit, if the H157's normally take a bit of relief in the neck or if the nut groove may be a little too grooved now.

Anyway any suggestions/setups or advice is appreciated.

Thanks

It is very common for the neck to change on a sitting guitar, humidity is ever changing and heat/cold effects the tension of the truss.

You will almost always require a slight relief to the neck. I don't believe the nut has changed.

I've gotten very lazy in this area. What I do now is just take each guitar to my local PLEK PRO operator and have every bit of the action scanned. The printout reveals exactly what is wrong and where, which then makes fixing the problem a whole lot faster. I've had such good success doing that, that I don't spend much time trying to get the setup right on my own anymore.

Yeah, I had the neck dead straight. The little bit of relief does help.

I'm not sure if there is a PLEK PRO in my area but i'll search around.

Thanks a lot for replying :)

If you can play the guitar with a little relief, I would call it good and leave that meat on the frets for when you need to level.

Dont forget if the nut is low a Plek will do nothing with the problem... Your frets may be level with a slight relief.... A good straight edge can help you diagnose more accurately.

I have several guitars that require a 1/4 - 1/2 turn of the truss rod in the Summer to relieve the neck a bit. Come Fall, I'll be cranking them back up.

Try that before doing the PLEK analysis. It'll save time and gasoline.

Absolutely correct. But taking it (the last guitar I had worked on) in to get scanned is how it was determined (in my case) that a new nut was needed.

Get some fret oil from beafifer.com. It is a treatment for civil war era fifes, which were made out of rosewood. No other fingerboard treatment is like it. Treat it, give it a week or so, and then start evaluating your fret setup. You'll thank me in the end.
