jamison162 Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 Disclaimer: I'm one tone picky SOB. Got to try out the Seth Lover bridge in my new H-150 Goldtop last night at rehearsal. This pickups are great and are soo, so close to what i want to hear. I select my bridge pickups based on crunch tones and not really the cleans. Likewise, I am more concerned with the neck and middle position tones when it comes to my cleans. So this report is only for the bridge position and crunch tones. The stock Golden Age pickups are actually really darn good. A bandmate also has an H-150 with 59's so we were able to go back and forth and compare. His H-150 is only s few onces heavier. I prefer the softer, spongier attack of the A2 mage in the Seth for sure. The Seth are clear and defined and make the 59's sound somewhat muddy to me. The Seth also has great singing highs for lead-work without being harsh at all. The downside is that overall, they are a tad on the bright side, lack a little low-end and are on the thin side. The 59's have a much stronger, punchier attack obviously, harder, faster if you will. I do like the low end punch and thickness of the 59's though. Now if I could only find a pickup that has all of the pro's and none of the con's of these two in one package I would be a happy man!! I will probably try an A4 or A5 in the Seth soon.
Kazwell Posted November 16, 2007 Posted November 16, 2007 I have a strong interest in your plight as I am in somewhat agreement about the S Lovers sounding a little thin in my H-150 as opposed to other pickups I have heard. Not a bad thing for the most part, but I tend ot yearn for a thicker sound at times. Interesting site-the RS Guitarworks, never heard of it before. You probably already saw this on their site, but in case you didn't, maybe this is another possible solution or could be used in conjunction with the magnet change http://www.rsguitarworks.net/rsstore/produ...products_id=404 I an VERY curious to see how all this unfolds, as I may just oder an Alnico IV myself- for 3 bucks plus shipping, that's the most painless modification/upgrade cost I have ever seen!!
jamison162 Posted November 16, 2007 Author Posted November 16, 2007 Yeah, I've known about RS for years and being a guitar tech, I've been installing CTS pots and various caps long before they were popular. You can get magnets many places. Al 2 and 5 being the most "popular". I haven't tried a IV but it has many very curious. I think I'm gonna try some WCR Darkburst. Got a used set for $210.
skydog Posted November 17, 2007 Posted November 17, 2007 I've got the Seth's in my 535 where they do fine. I've owned a 150 with Seth's and prefer my current setup with a custom/custom in the bridge and a 59 in the neck. But, this is just what works for me!
jamison162 Posted November 19, 2007 Author Posted November 19, 2007 The custom customs are very thick. Think I'm going to trade-in the Seths for the AII-Pro set. They seem to be just a tad warmer and fuller, I think they will be just the right mix for an A2 that I'm looking for.
rooster Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I've tried many pickups in my 150s, including the Seths. I will say that, IMO, the Seth bridge PU is the best PAF-type pickup I've played from a major manufacturer, but I am settled on the Bill Lawrence L-500L(bridge) and L-500C(neck) combo. The L-500C is a fantastic neck pickup, it rings like a bell, almost like a strat neck pickup, but more output and balls with NO mud whatsoever. The L-500L sounds just like the wood in the guitar, and can drive any amp into a good grind on 10, but backed off, sounds like a classic PAF. The tone controls work better with these than any other I've played. But, that's just my opinion. rooster.
dblazer Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I've got the Seymour/Seths in the 10th anniversary H-140 and I love them, my favorite humbuckers, for sure. I wanted to get a little thicker sound, so I bought an H-137 with the Lollar P-90s. That works. Give Jay Wolfe a call and he'll hook you up . . . ;D
