ElNumero Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Does anybody have any suggestions for this annoying problem? Since I have multiple Heritage guitar cases, all looking the same, I have a hard time differentiating between what is in each case without opening each case. A few years ago, I took a strip of masking tape, stuck it to each case near the handle, and wrote the model number with a sharpie. Well, over time, those strips of masking tape faded and deteriorated, and all that is left is a 3 inch strip of sticky goo, which has to be removed by Goo-Gone. I have wracked my brain trying to find a labeling solution, something that won't leave a sticky residue, something that will stand the test of time, and give me the ability to immediately recognize which case has which guitar in it! I also have the same problem with several Gibby cases. Having multiple Heritages is a good problem and a blessing, however I know I cannot be the only one with this identification problem! And if somebody suggests to "sell my Heritage guitars" as the answer, well, fuggetaboutit.
davesultra Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Luggage tags on the handles always works for me. You can always color code them, you'd just have to remember which color is for each guitar.
DetroitBlues Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Painters tape with the model written in Sharpie.
Conneazoo Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 Painters tape with the model written in Sharpie. +1
ElNumero Posted October 20, 2015 Author Posted October 20, 2015 Painters tape with the model written in Sharpie. Painters tape is like masking tape. It will disintegrate over time, and will leave a horrible sticky residue. I like Dave Sulta's idea, can probably even buy them at the Dollar store.
LK155 Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I store mine vertically, in model number sequence left-to-right. 137 150 155 535 No case goo required. If you have less than 20 Heritages, this may work for you.

I like Dave Sulta's idea, can probably even buy them at the Dollar store. I have cases that have had painters tape on them for years. I can assure you that it doesn't breakdown or disintegrate. However, the edges do have a tendency to lift over time. There is no residue left behind. It will leave a nice clean strip on a dusty case though. The luggage tag is a good idea. I would lean more towards one I could write on rather than color coding, but that's just me.

So painters tape is not the same as masking tape? It that the blue colored tape?
Conneazoo Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 So painters tape is not the same as masking tape? It that the blue colored tape? Yes, the blue tape. I use the 3M/Scotch brand, I don't know if brand really matters, but that's all I've used.
Gitfiddler Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I also use Blue Painter's Tape...as well as a bastardized Dewey Decimal System and Excel spreadsheet. Come on , man, get your shite together! Aren't you a CPA or something?

JeffB Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 when I was working in retail many years ago last week we would have about 2-300 guitars with cases at any time. No problem spotting the brands, but 30 PRS cases in a row could be daunting and 40 ESP and LTD cases more dauntinger. Easiest solution was just to grab the first case that fit the guitar whether it was the right or wrong one. Not so cool when it was a vintage guitar and generally frowned upon by most customers. Tried masking tape and tags. In the end I just closed the lid with a business card with the details written on them at the end that stuck out from the rack. This worked where tape or tags failed. I dont know why. Mightve been the massive dummy spit I had trying to get arty musicians to understand basic productivity and organizational concepts after spending another 1/2 hr looking for a case while the customer stood by wanting to go home and play his new guitar.
Speedyeast Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 The blue painter's tape works great. The masking tape is a mess--for the reasons described above. Luggage tags will work, but if you store your cases on their side, tape on the butt end is easier to see. Of course, it's easy to distinguish the 18" cases from the 17" cases, from the 16" cases, etc. My Super Eagle stands out above the crowd among the other archtops--as it should.
schundog Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I use Jeff's method, and write the details on the back of my business card and slip it under the closed lip of the lid. This also allows for me to write the date of the last string change. (When I remember to write it down.)
big bob Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I use an old 70's label maker, and all my ex-wives names🎸
Spectrum13 Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 You can place the masking tape on the wall and sharpie the model like reserved parking spaces and always put the same guitar in the same space. You can weigh each guitar in the case and record the weights on a chart so what ever case you choose, you weigh it and check the chart and know what model you have in hand. You might also get an old xray homeland security throws out when they renovate the airport checkpoints.
TalismanRich Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Go by Office Depot and get a hundred tie on shipping tags for $5. Either tie it to the handle or a latch. That way you know what guitar goes on what case after you pull them out for your "gear shot".
HANGAR18 Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Here is what I do, take it or leave it. I cut off a slab of Gorilla Tape and apply it on the body of the case, either near the handle or on the very end and trim it to fit nicely if there is any overhang over a seam. Then I will take a silver paint Sharpie marker and write my real name and handle (ie HANGAR18). Sharpie also makes gold pens too. It's a little tricky to get the metallic markers to stick to the shiny black surface of the Gorilla tape but it works good enough. I always intend for this to be a permanent label but I have peeled many of them off nicely when I suddenly found myself in the middle of a transaction to sell the guitar to someone. I also use the Gorilla tape to patch up peeling tolex on cases and speaker cabinets.

DetroitBlues Posted October 22, 2015 Posted October 22, 2015 This suggestions totally confused me Rich. Find your nearest Home Depot, (Its ok to ask for help or driving directions). Home Depot is a large store for home improvement projects, but that's not important right now.. Look for these... Tie them to the case handles after you label them with the guitar inside the case. The cost $30, but you get 125 of them. Or if you are really brave, you can order them here,

What's that?" Kid: "An interrogative statement designed to elicit information. But that's not important right now."
