abcpeterson Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 I have a 2014 Prospect with the Seth Lovers - they are fantastic. Another great pickup you may want to consider, depending on the style of music you play, is the Amalfitano Barrybucker set. I have these in my Les Paul, they are really great pickups. Brian
Gianluca Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 To me there is something sacrilegious about putting Gibson pickups in a Heritage guitar. I really like Seths. I have a set of Mojotone '59 Clones in my 150 that I absolutely love. I prefer them over Seths. +1 Mojotones are good PUs

I have a set of Mojotone '59 Clones in my 150 that I absolutely love. I prefer them over Seths. That being said, you specifically asked about Seths and 57 Classics. So I limited my original response to those pickups. Really? It's not like you're mixing skim milk and pasteurized and they're gonna blow up. Let me tell you what really happened... Every night before I go to bed, I have milk and cookies. One night I mixed some low-fat milk and some pasteurized, then I dipped my cookie in and the shit blew up. tbonesullivan Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Just remember to check the routing depth. With stock HRWS the guitar was most likely not routed deeply enough for the long legs and screws on many of the old school pickups.
Rude Dog Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 I'll echo tbone's comment - whichever make you go with, request short-leg baseplates. Then it's a non-issue. I think most pickup makers offer short-leg baseplates as an option. I haven't been inside as many as some here, but guitars that came from Heritage with Schaller pickups seem to typically have pickup routes that are not deep enough for long-leg/PAF style baseplates. Guitars with OEM Seymour Duncan pickups do have routes deep enough for the long-leg base plates. Those with other experience, please feel free to correct me. Oh, and I'm very parital to Tyson Tone pickups, they're my absolute favorite current production pickups... but I'm also a bit biased. : ) -Bobby Tyson
ElNumero Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I had 57 classics in my 535 and I thought it sounded great. Seths would be my second choice.... Is your 535 gone? I never had a chance to repurchase it
Gitfiddler Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 What, no Throbak fans?? I'd love a set of their SLE's in my 555. Maybe Santa will read this post and hook me up. http://www.throbak.com/paf-pickups.html
CJTopes Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Is your 535 gone? I never had a chance to repurchase it Yeah, It wasn't on CL for more then 10 min before I got a call.... Met the guy and sold it a few days later.
tonedeaf Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 Love to know how the swap works out. I have HRWs in my 535 and I can not imagine swapping them out.
Hbom Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 I have a friend on another forum who is going through this exact same swap. Since I've never owned a 535 I can only pass on the info I've read there. Shlabotink pickups. They seem to be the new 'in' brand. Vintage wire V V T. use the extra hole for flowers or an escape hatch.
neutria49 Posted December 5, 2015 Author Posted December 5, 2015 Love to know how the swap works out. I have HRWs in my 535 and I can not imagine swapping them out. Pots are due in any day now. I bought the Vintage taper custom CTS pots that The Art of Tone offers. Switchcraft and some vitamin Q of different ratings. The HRWs are fine pickups. Probably just not for me so experimenting before I move them along. I may find I like them best. Either way, the new pots and caps will be an upgrade.

I considered the Shlabs and the Gregwinds and a JB but from what I've heard they will give too much of a mid hump for a laminated guitar. This is pers. com. with only one person though but he has a lot of experience. So sticking with the A2 magnet type PAFs. I like your idea of an hole for a rose or incense stick but I really need the 2 x 2 because I intend on using a different value cap in the neck than the bridge.
JohnCovach Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 I've got Lollar Imperials in my 555 and they sound great, but I think what really opened it up were the 500k pots. I bought the harness made by Martin Six String Custom http://www.martinsixstringcustoms.com
Blunote Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Great to see you post here again John. Any chance you'll be doing any more Yes/J.Tull shows in S.E. Michigan this year?(sorry for the hijack)
High Flying Bird Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I swapped out HRWs for Phat Cats. I get killer tone in spite of my sour notes.
Polo Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 I swapped out HRWs for Phat Cats. I get killer tone in spite of my sour notes. Big props Bird.....Always liked this one quite a bit!
yoslate Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Big props Bird.....Always liked this one quite a bit! I swapped out HRWs for Phat Cats. I get killer tone in spite of my sour notes. Nicest Chestnut burst on the planet!!
neutria49 Posted December 10, 2015 Author Posted December 10, 2015 I swapped out HRWs for Phat Cats. I get killer tone in spite of my sour notes. Are they short legs or did you have to rout it a bit?
High Flying Bird Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Big props Bird.....Always liked this one quite a bit! Nicest Chestnut burst on the planet!! Thanks Rob. It's my favorite and the only guitar I play.
High Flying Bird Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Are they short legs or did you have to rout it a bit? I had a local shop put the pups in. I doubt they had to do anything special because it only cost about $125.00 and only took a week or so. Guitar center had the pups at the wrong price so I got them for 1/2 price too. Phat Cats are cleaner than the Lollar's on the 137s. They howl through my AC15. You can feel the air coming out of the f-holes. Great woody tone.
Gitfiddler Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Phat Cats came from the factory in my 535 Goldtop, so I doubt if you'll have any issues installing a set if that's what you are considering.
tulk1 Posted December 10, 2015 Posted December 10, 2015 Phat Cats stock in my Prospect, too. Big and PHAT!
ArcadianRhythm Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 What, no Throbak fans?? I'd love a set of their SLE's in my 555. Maybe Santa will read this post and hook me up. http://www.throbak.com/paf-pickups.html I have the SLE-101 set in my 150 and LOVE them. They just sound like a great PAF, super clear, no mud. They do that "tele on steroids" thing. I also know a guy who has a 535 with the SLE-101+ set in it and have played that guitar. Similar to the 101's but a little more aggressive sounding with more mids. More "attitude". Worked great in that guitar. OP if you're looking for A2's then the SLE-101's I think would go great in a 535. They're expensive though.
