I believe that the P in the serial number would put it at around the year 2000..

One thing I like about these H 140s (or at least some of them) is the wooden pick guard. does yours have one?

These pups don't sound like the Schallers I'm used to but I believe they're original. They have no covers. Any ideas?

Look under the pickups during your next string change.

Those appear to be Schallers. You can tell by the three mounting screw holes visible under the pickup ring. Schaller mounting rings are VERY susceptible to cracks, and Schallers can also be mounted using the middle screw hole. Love black guitars BTW!

I have an H-140 that had the Schallers in it. They were not bad but I put some Dimarzio Anniversary PAFs in it and it sings. I also have them in my H-170.

However, if you have the Lollar Imperials in your H170, I can almost guarantee you will like them in the H140 as they seem to be similar guitars. Like I said, the Dimarzios sound wonderful in both the 140 and 170.

My generic answer to anyone looking for pickups is to just pick out a set of Seymour Duncan pickups which you think will best suit your needs. Youwill also need to have an idea of whether you want wax potted pickups or not before you start out. Some say they prefer the non-wax potted pickups better because it makes the pickups sound more "articulate" and they like the tone better. Throbak pickups are in this category, are very highly regarded and have a lot of passionate followers. But I like wax potted pickups better because they are more forgiving (you don't hear every little mistake with great clarity) they are less prone to feedback or becoming microphonic and I'm fine with the tone palate available in the wax potted category. I do gravitate toward Alnico 2 pickups but will stray occasionally. There is a whole lot of reading material and sound demos available on the Seymour Duncan web site.
