rwinking Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 So I am fairly new here but a passionate Heritage lover now. I am still not sure of the difference between a hoarder and a guitar collecter except that I can write off the guitars on my taxes but not the 30 years of old newspapers. At any rate, the first Heritage I bought was an H-170, I have since gotten ahold of a 535, 140, 150, etc. However, there is something about the 170 that gets to me. I don't know the history of them but as mine is from 1986, I assume it was one of their first models. There is something classic about it....kind of like there are strats, teles, Les Pauls, SGs, etc, and the 170 just feels like one of those old classic guitars....like the design has been around for 60 years or something. I don't hear much about them around here and wonder if I am alone in my love for this guitar. How long were they made? They are similar to the old Ibanez Artists or the Fender Robben Ford except a little smaller. Maybe as it was my first Heritage, it is kind of like my high school girlfriend or something?
Millennium Maestro Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Love the 170's, the new generation has a super neck access.
davesultra Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I have a Black 170 from '04. It's one of the most comfortably balanced guitars I've ever had.
Gianluca Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I own a 1979 Ibanez Artist 2622 'Steve Miller' I happened to handle a preowned H170 in a shop they're not the same guitar, the Ibanez is a good one, bit it's not as balanced as the H170 is great guitar :-)
pressure Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 If you look at older posts you'll find quite a bit of H170 love. But to save you the trouble i'll repost some images of my custom H170. Among its other qualities the H170 has fab access to them upper lead frets. Lance will probably chime in here to.
rwinking Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 I have a 1976 Artist also and you are right.....they are not the same guitar. however there is a similar vibe to them. the H-170 is much cooler than the Artist. It is so perfetly balanced. It sings when I want it to but also is capable of out and out screaming. I wasn't sure if they were still around. the new design is cool, but I still think the older ones are a bit more classic looking.
Polo Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I've said it before.......any H-170 talk should start and end with Pressure's fab H-170 CM!! It's TOPS!!!!
rwinking Posted January 15, 2016 Author Posted January 15, 2016 Here are a couple of shots of my 1986 H-170.
PunkKitty Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I think the 170 that Ren is playing in the video used to be mine. It was my first Heritage. I regret selling that one.
pressure Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Hmmm... Phone software update leads to quadruple posts.
Coyotesgator Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 If you look at older posts you'll find quite a bit of H170 love. But to save you the trouble i'll repost some images of my custom H170. RhoadsScholar Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 This old dude seems to like 170's. Hey, that's my 170 LW 2nd edition (1st one built). Picked it up a couple days before the 1st PSP. The 170 is a great guitar. I love mine. The neck join the body differently between the 2nd edition and 1st edition and I believe the 2nd edition has the same thickness as the 150 (1st edition was a little thinner). Although not as popular as the 150/157, in my opinion, it is a unique heritage design and usually they can be had for a little less only because they are less popular. Count me in for some 170 love.
RhoadsScholar Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 My son recorded both these videos when I picked it up (Mr. Wall has more youtube hits than I do.) I had it finished in all gold back, front, neck headstock etc. Great memories picking that one up.
rwinking Posted January 16, 2016 Author Posted January 16, 2016 That is an interesting 170 having one tone and one volume. Mine has one tone and two volumes. I disconnected the tone for the neck pick up though as I rarely would need to cut the high end. Did any of them have two and two?
Gianluca Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 rwinking, nice H170, most likely my preferred livery ;-) for example:
Gitfiddler Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Hey, check out this 1985 Kalamazoo built Gibson Les Paul Spirit II XLP 400 https://www.gbase.com/gear/gibson-les-paul-spirit-ii-xlp-4-black
rwinking Posted January 19, 2016 Author Posted January 19, 2016 I guess that answers my question about how the H-170 came about. That is a cool guitar!
Dandownunder Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 Mines a 2004 i almond burst. Beautifully balanced and one of my favourites but the upper fret access is not so good due to the longer back bit and positioning of the the strap button. Still love it I've also got an 84 LP spirit I
