Mbrown Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Hi everyone, just got in the Heritage family with a black H-150 classic, dated 2007. The guitar is a little bit distressed, mostly 3 small bumbs on the back of the neck, but you don't feel them playing and it has a sustain that is everlasting. Got in love with it after 15 minutes of playing, great guitar. Once at home, I proceeded with the usual string change and a general checking at the eletronics. To my great surprise, on the electronic back plate it was written "Heritage custom Shop" and, after removing the neck pickup, I found that the pickups are "Heritage Guitar pickups by Rendal Wall", then on the metal plate HRW and the construction date 2-22-2007. How are these pickups? They are worth keeping or it's better to change them? I mostly play blues, classic/hard rock
tulk1 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 HRW = Custom Wound Pickups by Ren Wall himself. Only Ren knows the secret to creating them. And he has stopped making them. So you have some nearly rare and sought after pickups there. I'd say if you like them, why worry about them? Welcome to the HoC.
Mbrown Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 Thank you! I will post some picture as soon as possibile!
rwinking Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I am curious where you found it. I saw one around here last August and really wanted to get it but and H-170 caught my eye. The great thing about Heritage is that people (including store owners) don't really know how cool they are so they can be underpriced a lot of the times.
Mbrown Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 I bought it in Italy (I'm italian, btw) in a shop selling mostly vintage instruments. I really don't know how a custom order Heritage managed to get to Italy. I know they were imported until a couple of years ago, but I don't think they took custom orders. It's a little mistery, really. I paid for it € 1250, which is around 1300 bucks, but consider that the price for guitars in Europe is almost 1:1 Euro compared to Usd. Just to give you an example, a new Gibson Les Paul standard sits around 2500 €. So, I think I made quite a bargain.
kidsmoke Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 you did well on many levels. But to answer your question....if you love the sound...what do you gain by changing the p'ups? Sounds like you a stock, intact H150. I wouldn't mess with the pickups. Just my .02$
gpuma Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Ciao Mbrown! I am Italian too, albeit living in the US. I bought my first Heritage in Rome at a guitar store called Abbey Road in Piazza Zama in 1989. Among others, I have a H150 with HRW pick ups too (bought that here though). I love it! Benvenuto!
Mbrown Posted February 1, 2016 Author Posted February 1, 2016 Here are some pictures of her: Here are the marks on the back of the neck, nothing that creates problem with playability: And here's the pickup: I will have a small gig with friends this evening, so I'm gonna test the pickup. So far, they seems good, but I want to test them together with other instruments. I was asking about the pickups because I don't know anything about them, so I didn't know if they were good or not
kidsmoke Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 A Tuxedo no less!! With Nashville bridge and stoptail! I dig. I was looking for this exact guitar a couple years back as it would have fit with out aesthetic. (Think Psychadelic Furs meets Black Crowes - blues rock in suits!) Hope it works out for you.
tsp17 Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 Awesome find! Welcome and congratulations. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
tonedeaf Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I have a gold top 150 with HRWs. Wouldn't even give a second thought to replacing them. (I also have a 535 and a 576 with HRWs.)
tbonesullivan Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 You can probably get those bumps on the back of the neck taken care of easily if you want. Looks like a great guitar!
rwinking Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Wow! What a great looking guitar and what a steal!
Blunote Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 HRW pickups are great. Very articulate, with lots of focus across the spectrum. They're wound a bit hotter than other vintage-style pickups so they often sound best adjusted lower in height. Hang onto that dotted switch tip. You only see them on guitars that have, or had HRWs.
MikeChandler Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Wow - she's beautiful! And you got the special pickups too, so your price was a real bargain. Congratulations!
Mbrown Posted February 3, 2016 Author Posted February 3, 2016 Thanks everybody! I am pretty sure I will keep the pups, they really sound good. I tried her side by side with a les Paul Traditional of 2008 and the Les Paul was totally anihillated, it sounded like a toy guitar compared to my Heritage.
Mbrown Posted February 3, 2016 Author Posted February 3, 2016 Ottimo! Veramente! Sapevo che erano ottime chitarre, ma francamente non pensavo così tanto. Sono veramente molto soddisfatto, soprattutto visto il prezzo pagato. For non italian speakers : -Great - Really! I knew they were great guitars, but i didn't know they were so great. I'm really happy, expecially due to the price paid.
gpuma Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 this is my H150 with HRW, sorry for the shameless plug. The pic is a little old, I installed reflector knobs now
