Pickups in a 157

I believe those are the Schaller PUPs that are found in most Heritage guitars of that era.

How are they?  Better, worse, louder, fuller etc compared to other pups and current pups in the Heritages?

My thought was to buy it, and replace the pups with something more aggressive (see my posts about PRS).  I think I would rather have a Heritage with newer pups than the PRS.  Don't get me wrong the PRS is very nice, but for the money, Heritage is so much more with it.

The schaller golden 50's pickups sound really good, especially in the midrange. I don't know if you read the other post about pickup cavity depth but these pickups have a shallow depth to them and for whatever reason when installing these pickups at the factory Heritage didn't rout the cavities to a depth that will accommodate Duncan and other after market pickups. you'll need to rout them deeper or drill a couple of holes for the mount bracket and screws.

I second that. The Golden 50 IS a great pickup. It just has a classic voicing rather than a modern humbucker voicing. I think a lot of modern hums are a tad muddy or just plain overpowering. The golden 50 has an almost p-90ish vibe to it. It all depends on what youre after. From what i have read, a lot of hums will fit. You just might struggle with certain Duncans but, dont quote me on that *disclaimer* hehe

I really love the Schallers tho. Makes my H170 sound like a really good SG.I was gonna change em but, when I heard em... No way!

Although I've since gone to Duncan Phat Cats in my Heritages, I must concur with doggy on his characterization of the Schaller, the original p'up in both.  Best solo I ever recorded was with the Schallers, in my 150, through my Top Hat, no effects.

On the 150, how do you know which pups are which?  I'm not very well versed on pups, and when they have covers, they all look the same to me.

Two hight adjustment screws would denote either HRW or Schaller. Not sure when Heritage switched to HRW but, by finding that out and dating the Heritage, you have a good idea which pickups are in there ie: gibson or SD have 1 adjustment screw.

The next time you change strings just remove the four mounting screws from one of the pickups and pull it out of the cavity and look at the bottom. The Schaller pickups have a gold metal back that's engraved "Schaller - Made in Germany"  They also have an adhesive tag on them that says either "neck" or "bridge" - They also have a tag on them with the month and year of manufacture.
