Johnny Smith at Chapel Hill

So, about 5 years ago I had the good fortune to have the tutelage of Mark Goetting during the search for an archtop for my son Nathan. Since then he's made it through the Jazz Studies program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He's been playing the Johnny Smith with the UNC big band the whole time. I want to publicly thank Mark for his generous guidance and share with all of you Nate's last performance with his combo before graduation.

Wow. Nathan and his ensemble play superbly. Congrats to all. Very special.

Very, very nice! Very accomplished. Congratulations to both of you...to your son, for his dedication, and to you, as his dad, for helping your son find and fulfill his passion. You son would have been working with Scott Sawyer, then. Scott's a friend of mine, a world class player, writer, and teacher, and beyond that, just a great cat! Thanks for sharing the video.

Yes, he's been working with Scott for several years at schooll. Scott is such a great player and a great guitar coach at Carolina.

Just watching the bass player sway to the first minute of solo guitar was worth watching. I'm impressed and excited that the next generation of jazz players are doing this...
