warriorpoet Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Hey guys. Looking into a custom ordered Prospect, and I'm wondering if y'all might have a suggestion or three. Here's what I have in mind: Prospect STD Piano black top Light almond burst sides/ back Flame back woods Black pg My own pickups (have a set of Ian Andersons to put in it) Rosewood/ dots White/ cream/ whatever is standard binding and plastics Nickel hardware I'd like them to do 50s wiring with Emerson bits, but not sure if that's something I can ask for. Also, I like something in the range of the stereotypical '59 neck carve or PRS's wide-fat. How do I go about asking all of this fluffery? Anything I'm missing? Thanks 'poet
Steiner Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Hi Poet - You're missing a dealer who listens and will fulfill your order. There are two excellent members here That deal in Heritages: Millennium Maestro and Skydog52 There's not a one of us here that's been underwhelmed with a custom order. Mine has truly become my Cold Dead Hands guitar. Congrats on your soon to be Heritage Prospect.
Vanschoyck Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 You'll probably get more substantive suggestions than this, and it sounds like you know pretty much what you want, but may I recommend you ask for an inlaid head stock logo (as opposed to the standard decal one I believe on that model.) I think in the end that one thing really makes for a classier guitar.

They had a busy day, so I thought I might see about any options I might not be aware of before putting down a downpayment. Thanks 'poet A lot of your build is standard features, Rosewood, Dots, Nickel, Cream binding, You can supply your pickups, The unique color combo is going to be an upcharge as with 50's wiring and possibly the neck shape( measuring a neck you like and supplying it to your dealer will help Heritage hit a home run.) Feel free to call, I love to chat guitars. Case is +$200.... Of course there are some dealer discounts, Bill will not be available till Tuesday to get a quote and build approval.
Millennium Maestro Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Thanks! Working with Graham over at Jay Wolfe. Your working with the biggest Heritage dealer in the world then! Good luck with your build, Advise here is moot. My advice knowing how the neck work has been pretty nice lately, hold off on the plek .... Let your neck stabilize to your region and if needed Jay allows for a discount up to a full year after purchase on the plek service! WE ALL EXPECT A NEW GUITAR DAY post here when you get her!

My guitar prof and Jay are fast friends, and I used to lurk the store quite often when I lived down there. Graham is a world class guy, and I love working with him. PLEK worth it, or is a good setup equivalent? Honestly, I'd have Ann Arbor Guitars do all of the fretwork if it were an option. They redid my Taylor and boy-howdy is it epic.
TalismanRich Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I'm with Vanschoyck on the inlaid headstock and go one further. I would order the bound headstock. It just looks better to me, which is why my first Heritage was an H157. I could have had a 150 cheaper, and didn't know that much about customization a dozen years ago.
tulk1 Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 The Prospect is my fav Heritage Guitar. Sounds like you're going to get a dandy guitar. Congrats. Enjoy ---- when you finally get it.
Steiner Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 A good luthier can do just as good a job as a Plek. The plek relies on a substandard fixture, The luthier relies on experience.

They redid my Taylor and boy-howdy is it epic. Nothing wrong with Wolfe. Great guys. That said, don't get nailed down. All the dealers mentioned here are world class people. I have met Guy and Paul personally. Let us have some fun and ask for three quotes, one from Jay, one from Millennium Maestro and one from Skydog52. Make these guys work for their business. The guitar will be made just the same no matter who it goes through. That is what makes America great! That is what makes Heritage, "Yuge!" ;^)

When I got my used 137 custom from guitar center last week I turned the truss rod down 1/4 turn to get some relief and raised the action just a hair. Don't ask me what type of hair on this forum... The next night I put on new DR's and set the intonation. A plek can't do that. Most people are glad it doesn't.

warriorpoet Posted June 18, 2016 Author Posted June 18, 2016 Y'all are amazing.I'd prefer not to have a bound headstock- Just dig the classic, simple look up there, but the rest of the stuff here is incredible. You guys rock!Let me know how this looks:Bodypiano black top finishlight almond sides/ backcurly maple sides/ back (prefer character to consistency)creme body bindingNeckrosewood/ dots fretboard (dark RW preferred) cream bound neck, unbound headstock bone or nylon nut- whatever sounds best MOP inlaid "The Heritage" logo nickel Kluson-type tuners Neck profile: similar to a stereotypical '59. I like PRS wide- fat best.1 11/16" @ nut1 1/4" width at body27/32" neck depth at nut (inc fretboard)12" radiusvery subtle "V" shape at nut unfolding to C shape at 12th fret. Less shoulder than "club" or "baseball bat" necks6150 sized frets preferredHardwareblack pickguard (3 ply would be nice)creme/ bone plasticsnickel hardwareAmber reflector knobs (I will provide)ElectronicsIan Anderson Standard wind PAFs (I will provide) 50s wiring with NOS caps (prefer 500k Emerson pots, .027 Sangamo PIO in neck, .047 MF in bridge, will provide NOS caps from personal stock) Shielded wiring
tulk1 Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 You might consider going with the Heritage wooden finger rest (uh, pick guard) that matches the top. Not a plastic 3 ply. It can be bound like the guitar, too. Would be real classy.
