Odds of me finding another 150 under 8.5 pounds?

I'm starting to look for a 150 to replace the one I had to sell earlier this year. How rare is it to find one that weighs less than 8.5 to 9 pounds? My old one was 8.6 pounds.

Posted

I'd say 90% are over 8.5lbs, and 75% are over 9lbs....

Just a guess of the one I have seen and played.

The black 1989 H-150 I got in 1990 was so heavy we called it the piano. It had the sustain of a piano, so bright and clear. Yet so heavy.

Posted

why not just look for a 140 that has traps?

I'm more inclined to look for a 150LW. I like the thicker body.

You like the size, but not the weight. I get that.

In my opinion, I'd like to have a 150 that was a thin as a 140 with a tummy cut. That would be sweet.

I have a 150 LW, its under 8.5, but you cannot have it.....yet....but you are on my radar. Its ASB by the way with SD59's

I like it when the sellers tell us the weight of these type of guitars, or any for that matter. And I wish some others would follow and do it too. It's become fairly common with lp's and not yet so common with H150's.

I imagine you've already looked into buying your old one back?

I haven't. I'm assuming that people are happy with the ones I sold them. I'm just hoping to find another at some point. I'm not in a hurry.

Well it's Friday afternoon and I'm going to tell you a little tale I had related to me by two people about heavy LP type guitars. This takes place back in the late 70s. A fella named Peter Frampton had a white LP Custom that was one of his signature guitars. Yeah him. Peter isn't a big guy so that white LP Custom he had was really too much for him. It weighed around 11 pounds. He had a tech he would have tune up or fix up all his guitars when he was off tour in the NY area. A fella I only know as Ronaldo. He took the LP in to Ronaldo and was telling him how he loved it but this guitar was killing his back. Ronaldo asked him "do you trust me" and Peter said "Yeah sure, WHY ??". Ronaldo told him he was going to need the guitar a while but he could fix it. And so Frampton left it with him.

Ronaldo proceeded to steam off the neck, removed all the electronics and put the guitar body on his band saw and very carefully sawed off the top. In the process right near the end he cut the sh*t out of his hand on the bandsaw. Like any good hard worker he wrapped the cut with a rag and kept working. Ronaldo then routed out much of the inside of the guitar and then glued it all back up and touched up the finish and got it all back together and tested it to make sure all the electronics worked fine. It now weighed less than 8 pounds. Frampton was in awe that his beloved Custom was so much easier on his back and didn't look any worse for wear. That was probably one of the first hollowed out LPs...

True story

How I heard this story was Joe DeNisco was acting as a middle man protecting Patrick Amato's family from any prospective buyers that might have tried to take advantage. Back in August 2015 Patrick was supposed to meet Joe at Ronaldos' shop for lunch but never showed. Because earlier that morning he had passed away. Joe told me that Frampton story... So did Chris, Patricks' son.

I was told directly that MartyGrass (Dr. Mark) was explicitly made the custodian of his guitars with Patrick's family in mine in case anything happened to him. Unfortunately (from what I have heard) Patrick's son is not honoring his dad's wishes. It's a shame really. Mark knows more about guitars and would never take advantage of Patrick's family.

That's the kind of thing that really has to be in writing, in a will.

Make sure you know all your facts before you go disparaging someone online son. Namely Joe DeNisco. Joe, out of respect to his friendship with Patrick stepped in because people were hounding Fran Amato to sell them this or that. And what they didn't know was Patrick had a full inventory of every guitar he owned and what he thought they were worth. The calls and emails were too much for Fran who was dealing with the loss of her life partner. Joe and Chris worked tirelessly to do the right thing for Fran. I got involved in early March right after my Mother died. I had some family money come my way, I dealt with Joe and Chris and eventually it was agreed I would pay not the flat market prices but what Patrick wanted, which was more. In some cases $500.00, $800.00 and $1000.00 more than what was originally posted on the Jazz Guitar Forum. I talked to Chris many times to be absolutely sure that they (Chris and Fran Amato) were satisfied with the prices I offered (again, Patrick's Prices). They were. So we closed the deal and I got the guitars and in the process Frangot all the funds I sent her (over 20k) and she got rid of her older Mercedes and bought a brand new Hyundai Sonata in the color she liked, fully paid for in cash with the proceeds from my dealing with them.

Any other stories you hear, make sure you know your sources and what their part in any deals is... My tenure here may be brief if I see that kind of post here again.

Know your sources kid.

I don't know how a thread about heavy Les Pauls and the Ronaldo story motivated you to bring up these rumors about the deals on Patrick's guitars. Maybe you would care to SHARE that motivation with us Kuz ???

When I posted my NGD thread on the Jazz Guitar Forum some two plus weeks ago a lot of guys were drop jawed I pulled off the deal so quietly. Normally I would not reprint something about me but to clear the record take it from someone who was close to Patrick and the Amato family and let him describe to you the truth. Make sure you have your facts straight before you start talking smack, you might need a lawyer son.

Joe Denisco: Hey guys,

Mike is probably going to kill me for this. But I'll deal with that.
Over the past 11 months, the Amato's have gone through hell. The lose of a figure such as Patrick had a strong effect on each and every one of us here. Can you imagine what the lose of such a powerful figure in his own home would be like? I can't. The Amato's are getting through, slowly but surely. Christopher has been amazing. Holding everything together for his Mom was tough. But he selflessly did it. And continues to each and every day. The kid is an angel.
A few people here had a hand in helping the family through the grieving period. If I mention any names, I will be leaving out an equal number of unmentioned people who helped Patrick's family. So I won't.

Well, except for one person. And that person is Mike.

He wont tell you what he did because that's the way he rolls. The man responsible for the upcoming NGD extravaganza is also responsible for going ABOVE and BEYOND in helping secure the future the Amato's will have left. When Chris gave me prices for the remaining guitars, Mike basically laughed at me and said I won't pay that. It's worth at least $500, $800, $1,000 more. He said "when I get the money, I'm gonna take care of my friend Patrick's family". And he did it unlike anything you could imagine. I'd get an email or a phone call every week. "Hey, I'm adding another one".. I think he is up to 6 now..
Me and Vinny joke and call each other nut bags all the time. Well let me tell you, Mike is the most generous, loveable, genuine and caring nut bags of all time.

Mikey, I am glad to know you buddy. If there is such a thing as Heaven, Patrick is there and he is watching everything that has gone on since he passed. And there are many things that he is happy about. But one thing that will leave him speechless, is how graciously you treated his most beloved family. Mikey you are a saint. Thanks for everything you did.

Guys, please stop hijacking this thread.

I asked a simple question. All I wanted was a simple answer. Take your disputes elsewhere.

Hey Punk Kitty... sorry if my relating the tale of Ronaldo was a thread jack. As for the recent comments that sure came out of left field...

By the way Punk Kitty, if you are in or still near Chicago you should PM me your cell number. Maybe you can come out to mi casa and play some of these guitars. We can go grab a bite to eat, you'll be my guest...

Now we return you to your regularly schedule programming, now in progress

I will not discuss this publicly anymore, I shouldn't have brought it up at all. But I knew Patrick well, called him often, and met him several times. We often discussed his guitars and he shared his knowledge with me. I have no agenda. I won't bring it up again. I just know what Patrick told me and his close friend. I am sorry I opened a can of worms. It won't happen again.

Mike, cool story. I can understand why you bristled, but Kuz is a stand up guy that did know Patrick personally. He's not a boy, not your son, and none of us here take too kindly to being hollowly threatened with legal action.

The hilarious thing about this is that, wherever he is, Patrick is laughing his ass off that he was able, one more time on the HOC, to stir shit up!!! RIP Patrick, Mike, enjoy those beautiful boxes, and hopefully you'll stick around and get to know us better.

Obviously a misunderstanding or I was told directly some false info. Again, let's just let this go. Sorry I brought it up, I just felt bad for Patrick and his family, but it looks like they are coping and moving on the best they can.

Kuz, I wasn't lucky enough to ever have known Patrick while he was alive. I did spend years reading his posts on the Jazz Guitar Forum and dang, I only lived 30 minutes from him up County Road 571 (Cassville Road, Jackson, NJ) but never got to meet him. What raised my hackles more than anything was the inference that Chris was not being stand up. I'm old Army, 2nd Armored Division, I can handle just about anything anyone says about me because I'm a stand up guy and I can look myself in the mirror when I'm cutting myself shaving... So I have no beef with you or any of you guys. And really what was on topic about this stuff anyway ??? Really. It is a can of worms.

And my invite goes to any of you guys. You get to know me you might understand why I'm called BigMike, it's not because I'm 6'3" 280lbs... I try to do things right, I got a big heart. I take it very personally when someone disparages someone I know to be of sound moral character. You can say anything you want about me, I can take it - and I can dish it out just as tough.

So anyway how about that Ronaldo story huh ? I have Patricks H150, I'll have to haul it out from under my bed and throw it on my Mom's old bathroom scale to see how much it weighs.

Blessings to you all

Well, BigMike, I guess we have a couple of things in common.... I am 6'5" at 225lbs and we love great guitars. I am glad to hear Patrick's family is coping.

As far as the weight of 150s and LPs.... I owned two weight relieved PRS 245s and while I thought they sounded fine, I didn't feel they sounded like a solidbody 150/LP. The amount of would removed in Heritage's LW versions are resulting sound chambers. This doesn't make them sound bad, just different to solidbody LP/150 sounds like.

Again, this is just my opinion.

Hey Kuz, well we are like minded then because I don't think you get anything for free in life. One of the things that makes a Les Paul or an H150 guitar give that tone is the wood, you take away some of the wood you lose some of that badass tone...

So fellas, who's coming out to mi casa to hang out. Like Patrick did, I smoke Cohibas and when I have friends I DO COOK... So I've thrown down best as I know how...

Hey Big Mike- I enjoyed reading the story about you and the Amato family, thank you for sharing. Btw, that 150 looks almost identical to my 150 LW, the one I told Punkkitty that I may one day release it to her. Mine has a bound headstock, other than that, they look like twin sisters! Cheers, Will

Hey Kuz, thanks for the PM, that was most kind of you - I responded and sent you my digits if you ever need to talk.

I figure we tabled that business. Thanks again for reaching out.

PunkKitty, howdy...
