Drew Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Who makes them - is it Schaller? Are they considered to be a budget or entry level pickup? Why are HRWs an upgrade - what do the Goldens do or not do that some people switch them out? Thanks
Drew Posted November 22, 2007 Author Posted November 22, 2007 oops my bad...they are Golden Age, not Golden Era...duh
skydog Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Drew: Do you own Martins also! (_8^(l) Doh I've never heard of the GA's but that doesn't mean anything. The HRW's are Schaller's that are rewound at Heritage IINM
doggy1972 Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Golden age pickups are Stewmacs own hummers. Think they could be licensed Schaller Golden 50s but, I couldnt be 100 % Check the stewmac web site. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_p...ge_Pickups.html
doggy1972 Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 This may also shed a little light http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...ewart+MacDonald
JohnCovach Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 I have Schaller Golden 50 pickups on a goldtop 157 that I bought from a fellow member here--I think they sound great. I can't tell you if these are the same ones StewMac sells as Golden Age, though the Schallers have the two screws on each side, while the StewMacs have one per side. I have a variety of pickups on my guitars--Gibson 57s, Seth Lovers, Duncan 59's, Dimarzio PAFs--and the Schallers stack up pretty well, while still having their own voice.
doggy1972 Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 I think they are fantastic pickups too John. Quite bright but, I really like that single coil type of vibe they have. As for the Golden age being Schaller copies, Im really not sure. I cant remember where I read it. Plus, I always take the things on the net with a pinch of salt. They seem to match the resistance readings for Golden 50s pretty well but, this is no guarentee. They sound pretty good but, the best thing to do is just play them and see if you like them I suppose.
